Chronicle of Human Rights Violations in the Sphere of Culture

Between January 1-15, 2022, the authorities handed down two politically motivated criminal sentences against cultural figures, authors and performers.

Mass dismissals because of civic position from cultural institutions and educational establishments continued.

The authorities returned criminal liability for activities on behalf of liquidated or unregistered organizations. Besides, on January 4th, the authorities published law #144-3 criminalizing the activity of unregistered or unregistered organizations.

The state monopolizes the right to the content of the national memory: on January 5th Alexander Lukashenko signed the law “Genocide of the Belarusian People”, which does not mention Stalinist mass repressions and the Holocaust.
