Aliaksandr Franckievič
Activist of an anarchist movement, writer, and author of prison literature.

He was repeatedly subjected to administrative and criminal prosecution for his civil position and participation in protests and has been recognized as a political prisoner twice.

Alaksandr Franckievič was a political prisoner from September 2010 to September 2013.

On May 27, 2011, Alaksandr Franckievič, was convicted in the Zavodski District Court in Minsk under part 6 of article 16 (participation in a crime in the form of aiding and abetting), part 2 of article 339, part 2 of article 351, part 1 of article 354 Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus up to three years of imprisonment in a medium-security colony.

Behind bars, he wrote two short stories The Diary of a Lost Girl and Hug Me Tighter. The stories were included in the book Voice of Freedom from behind Bars. Anthology of works of Belarusian political prisoners (Vilnius, 2013).

In 2013, for the short story Hug me tighter, Alaksandr Franckievič became the laureate of the Francišak Alachnovič Award, founded jointly by PEN Belarus and Radio Svaboda, given for the best work written in prison.

Alaksandr Franckievič was arrested on August 13, 2020.

On August 28, 2020, he was recognized as a political prisoner.

Alaksandr Franckievič was indicted by the following articles of the Criminal Code: part 1 of Art. 293 — Organization of mass riots; part 3 of Art. 293 — Training of persons to participate in mass riots, or financing such an activity; part 1, Art. 342 — Organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order or active participation in them; part 3 of Art. 361 — Calls for actions aimed at harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus; part 3 of Art. 218 — Intentional destruction or property damage, committed in a way that is dangerous to the general public, or which entailed causing damage on a large scale; part 2 of Art. 339 – Hooliganism committed by a group of persons; art. 341 — Desecration of buildings and property damage; part 1, Art. 361-1 — Creation of an extremist formation or participation in it; part 3 of Art. 130 – Inciting enmity or enmity; part 2 of Art. 339 – Malicious hooliganism; Art. 295-3 — Illegal actions in relation to objects with the use of combustible substances; part 1, Art. 285 — Creating or managing a criminal organization; part 1, Art. 13 and part 2 of Art. 293 — Preparation for mass riots.

On September 6, 2022, the Minsk City Court sentenced Alaksandr Franckievič to 17 years in a medium-security penal colony and fined him 22 400 rubles (over $8,800).

On February 28, 2023, the Supreme Court reviewed Franckievič’s appeal in a closed session. The judicial panel decided to shorten Franckievič’s sentence by 3 months. As a result, he is to spend 16 years and 9 months in a medium-security penal colony.

On March 16, 2023, the KGB added Alaksandr Franckievič to the “terrorist” list.

In March 2023, he was transferred to Penal Colony No. 5 in Ivacevičy.
