Siarhiej Sacuk
Fiction writer, investigative journalist, editor-in-chief of the Yezhenedelnik electronic newspaper.

Worked as an editor of the journalistic investigation department of Belorusskaya delovaya gazeta and editor-in-chief of the Ezhednevnik website (ej.by).

In 1998-1999, he published the fantasy novels in Russian Miratvorcy Konusu and Spiecpodrazdieleniye Chistki under pen name Siergiey Barnatin.

On March 25, 2020, Siarhiej Sacuk was arrested under Article 430 of the Criminal Code (receiving a bribe). On March 26 and 27, the office was searched, Siarhiej Sacuk was arrested. On April 4, 2020, the decision to detain Siarhiej Sacuk was overturned.

On December 8, 2021, Siarhiej Sacuk was arrested once again. His house was searched, his phones and laptops were confiscated.

Siarhiej Sacuk is behind bars in Pre-trial Detention Center No. 1 in Minsk.

On December 9, 2021, he was recognized as a political prisoner.

On June 9, 2022, it became known that the writer and editor of Yezhednevnik, Siarhiej Sacuk, was charged with two more articles of the Criminal Code. The Belarusian Association of Journalists managed was informed by his former cellmate, that the editor is now accused of inciting enmity (Art. 130 of the Criminal Code) and exceeding authority or official powers (Art. 426 of the Criminal Code). It is not known what specific actions of the editor are related to the accusation.

On October 26, the Minsk City Court sentenced Siarhiej Sacuk to 8 years in a colony.

Sacuk was also fined 16,000 Belarusian rubles ($6330). He is deprived of the right to hold positions related to the performance of organizational, managerial, administrative, and economic duties for a period of 5 years. In addition, the court decided to collect the sum of 12 thousand 384 Belarusian rubles ($4900) from the accused to the state income.

Since March 17, 2023, Sacuk has been on the list of “extremists.”

On February 10, 2023, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal and upheld the verdict of the first instance.
