Aleh Katsapau

Aleh Katsapau is a writer, poet, and social activist.

He was born in Homel in 1969.

He graduated from the philological faculty of Homel State University and was involved in popularizing Belarusian history and culture. In the early 1990s, he led the Homel youth historical and cultural association “Talaka.”

Aleh Katsapau’s poems were published in the newspaper “Literature and Art,” magazines such as “Krynitsa,” “Maładość,” and in the collection “Jahamość: poems dedicated to Anatol Sys.”

On March 21, 2023, Aleh Katsapau was detained on administrative charges and accused of producing, distributing, or storing extremist materials under Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses.

Currently, he faces charges under Article 130 Part 1 of the Criminal Code (incitement of social enmity or discord), Article 368 Part 1 (discrediting the president), and Article 361.4 Part 1 and Part 2 (assistance in extremist activities).

On November 24, 2023, his criminal case began to be considered in closed proceedings at the Homel Regional Court.
