On June 30, 2021, Valeryja Kaściuhova was arrested after a search of her apartment and placed in a Pre-trial Detention Center No. 1 in Minsk.
Valeryja Kaściuhova was accused under Art. 361 of the Criminal Code – Calls for actions aimed at harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus, as well as Part 1 of Art. 357 of the Criminal Code – Conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means.
On July 20, 2021, she was recognized as a political prisoner.
On February 6, 2023, the trial of the criminal case of Valeryja Kaściuhova and researcher Taćciana Kuzina began in open mode in the Minsk City Court. Valeryja Kaściuhova is accused on the basis of part 3 of Art. 361 of the Criminal Code (calls for actions aimed at harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus); part 1 of Art. 357 of the Criminal Code (conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means); part 3 of Art. 130 of the Criminal Code (inciting social enmity).
On March 17, 2023, the Minsk City Court handed down a verdict in the criminal cases of researchers Valeryja Kaściuhova and Taćciana Kuzina. Both were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in a low-security colony, found guilty under three articles of the Criminal Code: part 1 of Art. 357 (assistance to actions aimed at seizing power), part 3 of Art. 361 (inciting for actions aimed at harming national security) and part 3 of Art. 130 (inciting social enmity).
