Persecution, Convictions, Censorship, Cultural Policy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

U\u0142adzimir Bu\u0142a\u016dski<\/b>, a well-known activist and organizer of cultural events in Viciebsk, was detained on November 26, he is now kept in the pre-trial detention center.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alaksiej Mina\u016d<\/b>, a political prisoner, writer and teacher of the Belarusian language and literature, was sentenced to 3 years in an open air prison on charges of \u201corganizing and preparing actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ivan Dabruk, Alaksandr Jend\u017eeje\u016dski<\/b> and <\/span>Nasta Suchanosik,<\/b> actors of the Hrodna Regional Puppet Theater, were asked to write applications for dismissal. This is not the first politics-related dismissal from the theater.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alaksandr Starych<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The<\/span> Cil<\/span><\/i> play of the Yakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theatre was banned in Viciebsk immediately after the premiere on November 21. The play by Ryhor Horyn based on the novel by Charles De Coster <\/span>Till Ulenspiegel <\/span><\/i>tells the story of a brave and resourceful leader of the Geuzen, who fought against tyranny. According to media reports, officials did not like the performance and were especially annoyed by the use of red ribbons and shouts from the stage <\/span>Long live Flanders!<\/span><\/i> The show was attended by the top officials of the Viciebsk region, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Culture: Minister Anatol Markievi\u010d and Iryna Dryha, head of the main department of state special cultural events and professional arts.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also became known about the dismissal of <\/span>Alaksandr Starych<\/b>, the head of the theater, and at least three actors \u2014 <\/span>An\u017ee\u0142a Barko\u016dskaja, Julija Kra\u0161e\u016dskaja and Arciom Hierlak<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The literary magazine <\/span>Vierasie\u0144 <\/i><\/b>won\u2019t be published anymore because the officials canceled the registration of its founder \u2014 The Franci\u0161ak Skaryna Belarusian Language Society.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Supreme Court will not appeal the verdict against <\/span>Miko\u0142a Papiek<\/b>, a poet and a political prisoner under the \u201ckarahod\u201d case. He was informed about it in writing at his place of residence: “there are no grounds for protesting” the letter says.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a search, <\/span>Natalla Pietuchova<\/b>, a Minsk tour guide, was arrested for 15 days for “refusing to open the door to KGB officers” and “physically preventing them from entering her apartment with her body\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus accuses <\/span>Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Sikora<\/b>, an actor from Mahilo\u016d, of \u201cinciting hostility\u201d. He left Belarus and was put on the international wanted list.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>\u0160\u010dorsy and Chraptovi\u010dy Foundation<\/i><\/b>, which was involved in the revival of the <\/span>Chraptovi\u010dy <\/span><\/i>Palace and Park Complex in <\/span>\u0160\u010dorsy<\/span><\/i>, was liquidated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Valery Mazynski<\/b>, a well-known theater director, Honored Art Worker of Belarus, founder of the Free Stage Theater and a teacher, was deprived of his pension for special services to the Republic of Belarus. The reasons for this decision have not been revealed, but Mazynski is known to have publicly criticized the current authorities for their cultural policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Life of the Imprisoned People<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Ihar Bancer<\/b>, a musician and political prisoner, was released from a punitive confinement after 20 days he was detained there. Later it became known that the court refused to transfer Ihar to the penal colony of a stricter regime. On November 25, it became known that Ihar was sent to a 10-day punitive confinement again, this time for recording a video for Mediazone about the conditions at the open air prison where the musician is serving his sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Viasna Human Rights Center calls to send poems to <\/span>U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d<\/b>, a political prisoner and human rights activist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The family of <\/span>Alaksandr Vasilevi\u010d<\/b>, a political prisoner, co-founder of online media, owner of Vondel \/ Hepta agency and \u040e Gallery, author of <\/span>Dad and the Penguin <\/span><\/i>fairy-tales,\u00a0<\/span>who recently received the <\/span>Franci\u0161ak Aliachnovi\u010d Award<\/b><\/a>, have not received any letters from him for several weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrej Alaksandra\u016d<\/b>, a political prisoner, poet, journalist and media manager who recently received the <\/span>Franci\u0161ak Aliachnovi\u010d Award<\/b>, sent a list of his favorite authors and works. <\/span>Sviat\u0142ana Aleksijevi\u010d<\/b>, a famous writer, and <\/span>U\u0142adzimir Mackievi\u010d<\/b>, a political prisoner, philosopher and writer, are among them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alaksandr Bahdana\u016d<\/b> (Papa Bo), a politically imprisoned DJ and art manager who has been in jail since September for “group actions that grossly violate public order”, sent his top 10 Belarusian tracks in a letter from behind bars. Among the performers \u2014 <\/span>Shuma<\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i>Pietla Pristrastija <\/i><\/b>band<\/span>, <\/span><\/i>Siarhiej Pukst<\/i><\/b> and others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dissent and Cultural Activism<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the week of immersion in Belarusian culture, a series of master classes for teenagers with prominent cultural figures have been run online by musicians <\/span>Rusia <\/b>and <\/span>Lavon Volski<\/b>, actor <\/span>D\u017amitry Tumas<\/b>, as well as <\/span>Mika\u0142aj Chalezin<\/b>, art director of the Belarusian Free Theater, <\/span>Anna Z\u0142atko\u016dskaja<\/b>, writer and journalist, and <\/span>Hanna Komar<\/b> \u2014 a poet and member of PEN Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span> book trailer<\/span><\/a> for <\/span>Andrej Fiedarenka<\/b>‘s book <\/span>The Metro Token<\/span><\/i>, a shortlist for the 2021 <\/span>Jerzy Giedroyc Literary Award<\/b>, has been released.<\/span><\/p>\n
