Pavie\u0142 Bie\u0142avus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Pavie\u0142 Bie\u0142avus<\/b>, the founder of the souvenir shop with national symbols <\/span>Symbal.by<\/span><\/i>, which was forced to close offline in 2020 for political reasons, got detained and later sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest for \u201cViolation of the order of holding mass events\u201d. According to the information in the media, the true reason was his mailing the book <\/span>Belarusian National Idea<\/span><\/i> by <\/span>Zmicier \u0141uka\u0161uk<\/b>, which was recognized as extremist. <\/span><\/p>\n

The case of <\/span>Eduard Pal\u010dys<\/b> was sent to court. <\/span>Eduard <\/b>is a political prisoner, political blogger and activist, detained in October 2020 and accused of \u201corganizing riots\u201d, \u201cactions that grossly violate public order\u201d, \u201cactions aimed at inciting other social hostility\u201d and \u201ccalls for action, aimed at harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fiodar \u010caranko\u016d<\/b>, vocalist of the <\/span>Nia Varta<\/span><\/i> band, was sentenced to 5 days in jail for following a media account recognized as extremist. During the trial, <\/span>\u010caranko\u016d <\/b>managed to shout that he had to sleep on wooden bunks without a mattress and use rolls of toilet paper instead of a pillow for the past few days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Singer <\/span>Alexander Patlis<\/b> was invited to perform at the Philharmonic at a concert in memory of Uladzimir Mulavin, a famous Belarusian musician. However, a few days ago Alexander learned that <\/span>he had been expelled from the program for \u201cpolitical reasons\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

Kry\u015bcina Ba\u0161arymava<\/b>, an artist and actionist, was detained for following channels deemed extremist in Belarus. A \u201crepentant video\u201d with the woman appeared in pro-government telegram channels. She is known to have been released on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zmicier \u0160ymanski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Zmicier \u0160ymanski<\/b>, bagpiper sentenced to 3 years in an open air prison under the article \u201corganization and participation in actions that grossly violate public order\u201d for playing the bagpipe during the peaceful rally on August 16, 2020, <\/span>managed to leave Belarus<\/b>. He is in Warsaw now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Barys Chamajda<\/b>, a cultural activist who has been promoting Belarusian culture right on the streets since the 1980s, was detained in Viciebsk. In the past, <\/span>Barys <\/b>workplace, the so-called \u201cIsland of Freedom\u201d, was decorated with a white-red-white umbrella and vy\u0161yvankas (traditional embroidered clothing), rallies were held there and the independent press was distributed. This week the police confiscated his books in Belarusian to check them for \u201cextremism\u201d. But <\/span>Barys <\/b>says he will not quit his job, even if everything is confiscated from him: he will come to the \u201cIsland of Freedom\u201d with a folding chair and will simply talk to people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Life of the Imprisoned People<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b>Arciom Fiedasienka<\/b>, a political prisoner and author of the music project <\/span>AF<\/span><\/i>, writes poems behind bars. <\/span>Arciom <\/b>is the director of a private printing house, who was detained on March 19, 2021. He faces up to five years in prison for \u201cprinting unregistered newspapers, stickers, and protest leaflets\u201d. Shortly before his arrest, he released <\/span>two singles<\/span><\/a>, but did not even have time to announce them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ale\u015b Pu\u0161kin<\/b>, a politically imprisoned artist, sent a new series of drawings called <\/span>Cellmates <\/span><\/i>from jail. It later became known that <\/span>Ale\u015b <\/b>had been sent for a psychiatric examination. He has been in prison for almost 8 months.<\/span><\/p>\n

It became known that <\/span>Viktar Babaryka<\/b>, a politically imprisoned philanthropist, \u201cearns\u201d only 50 BYN (18 EUR) per month in the colony. Previously, this amount was 1.6 BYN (0.6 EUR) a month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dissent and Cultural Activism <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

November 15 is<\/span> International Day of Imprisoned Writer<\/b>. <\/span>Radio Free Europe<\/b> and<\/span> PEN Belarus have announced seven winners<\/b> of the <\/span>Franci\u0161ak Aliachnovi\u010d Award<\/b><\/a> for works based on personal prison experience of the authors:<\/span><\/p>\n

    An exhibition of painted carpets <\/span>I can explain everything <\/span><\/i>by<\/span> Maksim Osipa\u016d<\/b> has opened in Bialystok, Poland. It presents biblical or historical figures from famous paintings or icons in the context of recent events in Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n

    A new novel <\/b>Hej Ben Hinom<\/i><\/b> by<\/b> U\u0142adzimir Niaklaje\u016d<\/b>, a writer, poet and member of PEN Belarus, was announced to be published in the Belarusian language in Poland. According to publishers, it is not possible to publish this book in Belarus for political reasons. Presentations of the novel will take place in November-December 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

    EthnoTradition<\/b> continues to add beautiful videos to the <\/span>online encyclopedia of traditional Belarusian costumes<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>

    Siarhiej Hrynievi\u010d<\/b>, an internationally renowned Belarusian artist whose paintings have been repeatedly removed from exhibitions for \u201cinappropriate\u201d content, gave a lecture on his work for the Belarusian Virtual University of the Golden Age.<\/span><\/p>\n

    A <\/b>book trailer<\/b><\/a> for Artur Klina\u016d’s book <\/b>\u0141okisa\u016d<\/i><\/b> and a <\/span>book trailer<\/b><\/a> for Jeva Vie\u017enaviec’s book <\/b>Pa \u0161to idzie\u0161, vo\u016d\u010da? <\/i><\/b>(Bel. for <\/span>Where are you going, wolf?)<\/span><\/i>, shortlisted for the 2021 <\/span>Jerzy Giedroyc Literary Award<\/b>, have been released.<\/span><\/p>\n
