An associate professor at Xinjiang University and founder of the university\u2019s Minorities Folklore Research Center, Dawut is recognised internationally for her unique contribution to the study and cataloguing of Uyghur cultural heritage. Her work was also recognised and supported by the PRC government. In 2016, just a year before she was initially detained, Dawut received a research grant from the Ministry of Culture, reportedly the largest ever given to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/a36421114\/rahile-dawut-disappearance-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uyghur research project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dawut disappeared in late 2017, shortly after making plans to travel from Xinjiang to Beijing to participate in an academic conference. It is presumed that the PRC government is responsible for her disappearance, holding her in secret without confirmation of her detention for over three years, despite international outcry and media attention, and a campaign led by Dawut\u2019s daughter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freemymom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">calling for her release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In July 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/rahile-dawut-07132021175559.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">investigative reporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Radio Free Asia\u2019s Uyghur Service confirmed her imprisonment according to sources within Xinjiang University.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dawut\u2019s imprisonment is emblematic of the Chinese government\u2019s efforts to dislocate the Uyghur population from their cultural identity and heritage through overwhelming levels of censorship and repression. Since the establishment of Xinjiang\u2019s expansive network of re-education camps in 2017, over a million Uyghurs and other minorities have been detained, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uyghuryar.org\/en\/2021\/04\/list-of-uyghur-intellectuals-imprisoned-in-china-from-2016-to-the-present%E2%80%A8last-up-dated-by-abduweli-ayup-on-march-13th-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hundreds of writers, poets, translators, scholars and public intellectuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who together represent the living embodiment of Uyghur culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Take Action<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PEN International considers Rahile Dawut\u2019s imprisonment to be a clear breach of her right to freedom of expression and calls for her immediate and unconditional release.
