The \u0130zmir Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office launched an investigation and sent the file to its counterpart in Istanbul, who decided not to prosecute. The claimant subsequently appealed against the decision. His objection was accepted by a penal court of peace in November, triggering a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bianet.org\/english\/law\/252987-nobel-laureate-orhan-pamuk-investigated-again-over-his-book-nights-of-plague\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new investigation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Pamuk denies all accusations.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Orhan Pamuk is Turkey\u2019s national treasure, a literary asset whose words reverberate across the globe and should be celebrated as such, yet he finds himself once again targeted for his writings. The Turkish authorities have repeatedly used criminal defamation laws to silence those who dare to speak out, and this case is no exception. The PEN Community stands in solidarity with Pamuk and urges the authorities not to prosecute him\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said <\/span><b>Burhan S\u00f6nmez, PEN International President.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Law 5816, \u2018The Law Concerning Crimes Committed Against Atat\u00fcrk,\u2019 protects \u2018the memory of Atat\u00fcrk\u2019 from insult by any Turkish citizen and carries up to three years in prison.
