The invitation had both a spirit of international literary fraternity and a clear feminist perspective: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00abLondon has no centre where well-known writers of both sexes can meet socially, no place where distinguished visitors from abroad can hope to find them. As a dinner-club would supply this need, it is proposed to start one\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong> John Galsworthy<\/strong>, the first president of PEN (and the first major donor), lifted his glass to writers from all the corners of the world and said: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00abWe writers are in some sort trustees for human nature. If we are narrow and prejudiced, we harm the human race. And the better we know each other, the greater the chance of human happiness in a world not, as yet, too happy\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A hundred years later, at the closing ceremony of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pen-international.org\/who-we-are\/annual-congress\/87th-pen-international-congress-100-years-of-celebrating-literature-and-protecting-freedom-of-expression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">87th PEN International Centenary Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the newly elected President of PEN International, Kurdish writer and lawyer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pen-international.org\/news\/burhan-s%C3%B6nmez-is-elected-president-of-pen-international-as-jennifer-clement-completes-her-six-year-term\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Burhan S\u00f6nmez,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> raised his glass and repeated exactly the same words, just adding: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00abSo we have a mission!
