The first hearing in the case will be held on 9 September. The organisation further calls on the authorities to stop using overbroad counter-terrorism laws to curb peaceful expression \u2013 both online and offline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Yavuz Ekinci<\/strong> has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bianet.org\/english\/freedom-of-expression\/249301-lawsuit-against-writer-yavuz-ekinci-for-social-media-posts-on-newroz-kobani-battle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">charged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with \u2018making terrorist propaganda\u2019 under Article 7\/1 and 2 of Anti-Terror Law No. 3713, for eight tweets published on his Twitter account in 2013 and 2014. The tweets, none of which promote or incite violence, for the most part related to the Newroz (New Year) celebrations in Diyarbak\u0131r, south-eastern Turkey, and to the battle of Kobane in Syria. The indictment comes in the wake of a sustained <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2020\/06\/turkey-stifling-free-expression-during-the-covid19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">social media crackdown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that has seen tens of thousands of people prosecuted in Turkey over their social media posts in recent years. The Ministry of Interior <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/tr\/turkiye\/icisleri-bakanligi-yil-basindan-bu-yana-6-bin-743-sosyal-medya-hesabi-kullanicisi-hakkinda-adli-islem-baslatildi\/1941962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> it took legal action against 6,743 users in the first seven months of 2020 alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018The Turkish authorities\u2019 sustained onslaught on peaceful speech on the internet shows no sign of abating and is prompting self-censorship. PEN International has repeatedly condemned the use of overbroad counter-terrorism laws to punish dissenting views. Yavuz Ekinci\u2019s tweets cannot in any way be read as terrorist propaganda. We urge the Turkish authorities to drop these absurd charges against him and to take all necessary steps to guarantee freedom of expression online\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said <strong>Salil Tripathi<\/strong>, Chair of PEN International\u2019s Writers in Prison Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>The Belarusian PEN Center joins the statement of PEN International and demands to immediately drop all charges against Yavuz Ekinci.
