Persecution, Convictions, Cultural Policy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

D\u017amitry Kuks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

D\u017amitry Kuks<\/b>, a former artist of the Charo\u0161ki ensemble, was due to be released after a 15-day arrest for “disobeying police officers”, on August 21, but immediately after his release, security forces put him in a dark blue minibus and drove him away. On August 23, he was sentenced to another 12 days in jail under Art. 19.1 of the Administrative Code (petty hooliganism).<\/span><\/p>\n

Dzianis Ilin\u010dyk<\/b> was sentenced to 14 days of administrative arrest for a sticker with Pahonia on his car.<\/span><\/p>\n

Siarhiej Ba\u0142achona\u016d<\/b> from Homel was sentenced to a year in colony for the song \u201c\u0141uka\u0161enka Go Away!\u201d which he saved on his personal page in Vkontakte social network; that fell under the Article of the Criminal Code for “insulting the president”. <\/span><\/p>\n

Andrej Piatro\u016dski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Andrej Piatro\u016dski<\/b>, a former teacher from Smarho\u0144, was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for having shown at his lesson last March a video about the Constitution with a logo of the media recognized as extremist in Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taras Tarnalicki<\/b>, a film critic, was summoned to the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption as a witness on August 25. Details of the case haven\u2019t been reported. He was released on a non-disclosure agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alaksandr Dubro\u016dski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Alaksandr Dubro\u016dski<\/b> \u2013 Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, Poet and Literary Critic, “by agreement of the parties” quit the Faculty of Journalism of Belarusian State University. The reason for his dismissal was his signature under the collective petition against violence and lawlessness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ihar Karpenka, <\/span>the Minister of Education<\/b>, claimed that “semi-legal private kindergartens and schools under the guise of individual entrepreneurs, public or religious associations, have been in most cases used for political purposes, becoming hubs for preparing coloured revolution.<\/em>“<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Authorities are liquidating<\/b> the Homel-based non-governmental organization Talaka<\/b>, which has been reviving ancient Belarusian folk rites, collecting folklore, and reconstructing authentic festivals since the 1980s.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The Minsk City Executive Committee is <\/span>liquidating the Center for Visual and Performative Arts \u201c<\/b>ART Corporation<\/b><\/a>\u201d<\/b>. The organization held the annual international theater festival TrArt and film festival “Listapad”, as well as organized the project TheatreHD, thanks to which Belarusians could watch screenings of the best foreign performances.<\/span><\/p>\n

Life of the Imprisoned People<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

On her way to court in a police van <\/span>Maria Kalesnikava<\/b> tells the guards about world-famous composers. Also while transported from the pre-trial detention center to the court Maria can see the sky and the roofs of houses, but in the courtroom nothing can be seen out of the window through the curtains. Maria denies all allegations in court.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ihar Bancer <\/b>has been punished by another 10 days in the punitive confinement. So far, that makes 30 days in total.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrej Pa\u010dobut<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Andrej Pa\u010dobut,<\/b> a journalist and member of the Union of Poles in Belarus, had his term in custody extended until November 26, it\u2019s been the sixth month since his detention. He refused to leave Belarus. Andrej is accused of inciting national hatred (part 3 of Article 130 of the Criminal Code) and faces from 5 to 12 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ksenija Luckina, <\/b>a former Belteleradiocompany journalist who made documentaries and historical reportages, has a growing brain tumor. Ksenija has been in prison for eight months. At first, she was linked to the “Press Club case” and accused of large-scale tax evasion. But after the case was closed, a new one was filed against her.<\/span><\/p>\n

U\u0142adzimir and Nadzieja Ka\u0142a\u010d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Alaksandr Vasilevi\u010d<\/b>\u2019s being in custody has been extended again. He has been kept in jail for nearly one year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Relatives of<\/span> U\u0142adzimir and Nadzieja Ka\u0142a\u010d<\/b>, imprisoned musicians from the band Irdorath, received their first letters from prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

U\u0142adzimir <\/b>is worried about his friends who got into this situation quite by accident. He writes that at first he found it hard to accept what happened, but gradually it\u2019s become easier. He learns to rejoice in every little thing, even the grass breaking through the bricks, the sky in the window, a short walk.<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>Nadzieja<\/b>‘s letter it\u2019s clear that she is trying to keep up. With her husband, they catch each other’s eyes through the slot in the cell door when they are led down the corridor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dissent and Cultural Activism <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

PLASTFORMA<\/b><\/a> \u2013 an international festival of physical and dance theatres \u2013 is taking place in Minsk on August 23-September 1. It\u2019s been organized yearly since 2013, and this year has its last season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>campaign<\/a> has been launched to create a <\/span>digital archive of the legendary Belarusian rock <\/span>band Novae Neba and a film about Belarusian rock music. The band is considered to be one of the main phenomena on the music scene of Belarus in the 90s.<\/span>

U\u0142adzimir Mackievi\u010d<\/b>‘s friends and colleagues have created a special <\/span>page on Facebook<\/span><\/a>, which will be maintained on his behalf, to continue the dialogue and find a way out together.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Selected Works” of Piatro Vasiu\u010denka<\/b>\u2019s (1959-2019), a talented Belarusian literary critic, novelist, playwright, essayist, storyteller, teacher, candidate of philological sciences, was published in Minsk.<\/span><\/p>\n

A new series of programs has been launched on the Good Channel. In the first episode, actor <\/span>Alaksandr \u017ddanovi\u010d<\/b> reads<\/span><\/a> an excerpt from the work by <\/span>Jan Bar\u0161\u010de\u016dski<\/b> “A nobleman Zavalnia, or Belarus in fantastic stories”.<\/span><\/p>\n

A festival of poetry<\/b> and a f<\/span>olk festival<\/b> took place in Hrodna region on August 28. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Museum of Belarusian Book Printing in Polack opened an <\/span>exhibition to the 85th anniversary of Hienad\u017a Bura\u016dkin<\/b>, dedicated to the life and work of the famous poet, public figure, the first representative of independent Belarus to the UNO.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Drahi\u010dyn<\/b>, an old Belarusian town known from the 15th century, people managed to get three streets in the city to take names associated with the region, while the city authorities planned to call them by names and realities associated with Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naviband <\/b>in a creative collaboration with Ryan O’Reilly, <\/b>have released an English version<\/a> of their song \u201cA Girl in White\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

Alex Kliuchko<\/b>, a Belarusian designer studying at the Metropolitan University of Oslo, created her graduation<\/span> collection Generation\u040e<\/b> inspired by Belarus’ history; each item has implicit meaning, some sort of code that viewers are invited to decipher.<\/span><\/p>\n
