Persecution, Convictions, Bans, Cultural Policy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Alaksandr Fiaduta<\/b>, a member of the Belarusian PEN Center, a writer, editor, journalist, literary critic, was detained<\/a> in Moscow by the KGB of Belarus due to suspicion of committing a crime.\u00a0<\/span>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka [Alexander Lukashenko] claimed that Fiaduta together with six other people <\/span>allegedly<\/span> planned to carry out a military coup and physically liquidate \u0141uka\u0161enka and his sons. <\/span>The defendants face up to 12 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

The play <\/span>Chernobyl Prayer<\/b>, which was to be shown at the Theater of Belarusian Drama on the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, based on the book by Svetlana Alexievich, was suddenly replaced by another show.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressure on individuals in the case of the <\/span>Union of Poles<\/b> continues.\u00a0<\/span>The Hrodna prosecutor’s office issued an official warning to <\/span>Andrzej Pisalnik<\/b>, an activist of the Union of Poles, who in early April expressed a number of opinions on Polish radio stations Radio 24 and Radio 4 about “large-scale propaganda against Poland by the Belarusian media.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Nasta\u015bsia Piatrova<\/b> [Anastasia Piatrova], an artist of the Opera Orchestra, was fired on 14 April. On 27 March, she was detained and served 15 days in jail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ta\u0107ciana Hacura-Javorskaja <\/b>[Tatiana Gatsura-Yavorskaya] was released from Minsk pre-trial prison No. 1 in Minsk on April 15, on the grounds that there were no reasons to keep her in jail.\u00a0<\/span>Uladzimir Javorski <\/b>[Yavorski], Ta\u0107ciana\u2019s husband, was forced to leave Belarus under threat of deportation for 10 years. Now he is in Kiev.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pressure on the family of the public activist of the Belarusian Language Society from Baranavi\u010dy <\/span>Ta\u0107ciana Ma\u0142a\u0161\u010danka <\/b>[Tatsiana Malashchanka], continues. Her husband was deported for three years, damage has been done to her property.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authorities plan to cut 20% of <\/span>jobs in the cultural sphere<\/b> in Belarus by the end of 2021. Today 65.5 thousand people are employed in culture, and the salaries are some of the lowest: 55.3% of the average salary in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

No books and magazines are allowed in the packages sent to prisoners of Brest and Mahilo\u016d <\/span>detention facilities<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Symbols<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

On the<\/span> coat of arms of Mahilo\u016d<\/b>, placed in Brest, approved in 2005 (in that form it was presented to the city in 1661 by the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Jan Kazimierz) “Pahonia” was painted over white, later it was removed at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

The white and red region name sign in <\/span>Brest region<\/b> was repainted over in white and blue.<\/span><\/p>\n

D\u017amitry Han\u010daro\u016d <\/b>[Dzmitry Hancharou]<\/span> was sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest for a Christmas garland in the window, the court also ruled to destroy the garland.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fines and administrative arrests continue being imposed for white-red-white flags, stripes on clothes and Pahonia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the danger, <\/span>women under white-red-white umbrellas<\/b> boldly and with dignity go out for a walk around their city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cultural Resistance <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The first online meeting<\/a> of the <\/span>Intellectual Club<\/b>\u00a0of Svetlana Alexievich <\/b>took place on 14 April. The topic of the meeting was “Why is the “red (wo)man” afraid of history?”<\/span><\/p>\n
