Arrests, Convictions, Prosecution<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Musicians from OK-band who were to perform at the gig in Smalavi\u010dy on February 13: <\/span>Aleh Karpienka<\/b>, <\/span>Siarhiej Ivano\u016d<\/b> and <\/span>Dzianis Ptu\u0161ka <\/b>have been sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest, along with the musicians of the band Ra\u017abitaje Serca Pacana:\u00a0<\/span>Dzianis Tarasienka<\/b>, <\/span>Pavie\u0142 Haradnicki<\/b>, <\/span>Andrej Osip\u010dyk<\/b> and <\/span>Alaksandr Kavalo\u016d<\/b>, and musicians <\/span>U\u0142ad\u017a Lepia\u0161ynski <\/b>and <\/span>Valeryja Suravickaja. <\/b>A total of 44 people detained during the concert are serving 15 days of administrative arrest, another 15 people were fined 870 BYN [278 EUR], a total of 660 days of arrest and 13,050 BYN [4167 EUR].<\/span><\/p>\n

On February 17, police officers came to inspect the homes of the\u00a0 RSP band musicians, searching for protest symbols but found none.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mass searches and detentions took place on February 16 among <\/span>journalists<\/b><\/a> <\/b>and human rights activists<\/a> \u00a0<\/b>around Belarus, the total number of those approached by security forces is almost two dozen. The Investigative Committee explained this by \u201cthe criminal investigation under Art. 342 (organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them) of the Criminal Code of Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ihnat Sidor\u010dyk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ihnat Sidor\u010dyk<\/b>, poet, director and actor, political prisoner who had been in prison since August 10, charged under Part 1 of Art. 342 (organization of group actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them) was released from the courtroom! He was sentenced to 3 years of suspended imprisonment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kry\u015bcina Pa\u0142taviec<\/b>, an artist who painted storks and “Long live Belarus” at various sites in Skidziel and the district, and <\/span>Andrej Apanasovi\u010d<\/b>, who sometimes gave her a lift, were found<\/a> guilty of “desecrating buildings and damaging property” and fined 150 [1390 EUR] and 100 [926 EUR] basic units respectively. Kry\u015bcina’s bicycle was confiscated as “a means by which a crime was committed.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ihar Bancar<\/b>, leader of the Hrodna street-punk band Mister X, public and cultural activist, has been in prison since October 20 charged under Article 339 of the Criminal Code (Hooliganism). He has been in solitary confinement since February 5, and his family is worried about his health.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pavie\u0142 Sieviaryniec<\/b>, the writer, politician, prisoner of consciousness, has been remanded in custody for another 2 months.<\/span><\/p>\n

Miko\u0142a Papieka<\/b>, a poet and beekeeper, had his status changed from a suspect to a defendant in the “Karahod case” in Brest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressure, Dismissal, Ban<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Hrodna-based bar and art space <\/span>Third Place<\/b>, which participated in the nationwide strike, were forced to close on February 16: the city authorities demanded that the owner terminate the contract with the tenants.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Polack, weekly guided tours for locals and visitors of the town, \u00a0<\/span>take place under<\/a> police surveillance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Anton Hry\u0161kievi\u010d<\/b>, director and professor of the Viciebsk State College of Culture and Arts, who joined the nationwide strike on January 25, was fired.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Tamara Viar\u0161yckaja<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Tamara Viar\u0161yckaja, <\/b>founder of the Museum of the Jewish Resistance in Navahrudak and co-founder of the Navahrudak Museum of Local History, has her contract not extended<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Also in early April, the contract of the museum’s senior researcher <\/span>Halina Kaval\u010duk <\/b>is not extended. The women believe that the reason for the dismissal was the guided tours they organized on Sundays and which were visited by individuals convicted under Article 23.34.<\/span><\/p>\n

Volha Siem\u010danka<\/b>, who worked at the Mahilo\u016d Drama Theatre, was fired on 18 February. In the fall of 2020, Volha was tried several times for participating in protests.<\/span><\/p>\n

The website of the <\/span>Cudo\u016dnaja krama<\/b> selling products with national symbols and its owner Ihar Kamzier\u010dak\u2019s social media were hacked<\/a> on the night of 18 to 19 February. <\/span>\u00a0The logos of the pages have been replaced with red and green flags, offenses were published.<\/span><\/p>\n

A fine for a national flag in one\u2019s own backyard, 10 days of arrest for a photo with a white-red-white flag, a trial for a mural with Pahonia, a fine of 580 BYN [188 EUR] for a white-red-white flag in a yard of your own house, 7 days of arrest for a “red wave” painted on the balcony, 15 days of arrest for white-red-white curtains, 12 days of arrest for the bas-relief with Pahonia on the wall of your own house, and this is by far not the most complete list of the repressions for the national symbols in Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ihar S\u0142u\u010dak<\/b> and <\/span>Alina Nahornaja<\/b>, activists known for fighting for a wider use of the Belarusian language in the public sphere have reported that police had been coming to their home for several months to photograph the flag in their backyard, and on February 21 the flags from their rooftop were stolen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
