Issue 11 of digest about the sphere of culture in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>PEN Belarus\u2019 Monitoring Results\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>PEN Belarus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been monitoring violations of human rights against cultural workers and cultural rights in Belarus (December 2019 &#8211; November 2020), and <a href=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2020\/12\/21\/stali-vyadomyya-pershyya-vyniki-manitorynga-parushennya-pravou-u-sfery-kultury-u-belarusi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">has presented the first results and data<\/a>. The year-end report is to be released shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Arrests and Convictions<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Aliaksej Halubec<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dj Delos, detained on December 13 and having spent two nights in Akrescina remand prison, was fined 30 basic units [\u20ac265].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Lera \u0141azuk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an artist detained on Sunday, December 13, was sentenced to 13 days in jail on December 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Sviat\u0142ana Kuprejeva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the daughter of the writer Miko\u0142a Kupreje\u016d, a former member of the initiative group of Viktar Babaryka and a close friend of their family, has been in custody since July 11 on charges of tax evasion. On December 11, the court extended her detention for another two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4801 \" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/dzyanis-filipenka-1-e1608632847701-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"175\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Dzianis Filipienka<\/b>, a musician from<b> Rahis <\/b>band, who was detained on December 14 to serve a 13-day administrative arrest, received another 13 days on December 16 (for participating in a protest on October 25).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detentions on Sunday, December 20:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Jahor \u0160umski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, photographer and designer, was detained near his home in Minsk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andrej Jankovi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cartoonist who became famous after a rally on August 30, when he protested in the image of a &#8220;fake president&#8221; and spent 7 days in jail for that (earlier he had served 10 days of administrative arrest for august 16), was detained in Hrodna.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Anton Sili\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a street musician, was detained in Hrodna.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Viktar Jakuba\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of Polack State University. He was detained as he was returning from a children\u2019s party in his neighbourhood.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Pressure, Dismissal, Ban<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andrej Bastuniec, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chair of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ), journalist,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on december 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/baj.by\/en\/content\/andrei-bastunets-walks-out-questioning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">was interrogated as a witness in a criminal case<\/a>, instigated under Article 361 of the Criminal Code (calls to actions aimed at causing harm to the national security of the Republic of Belarus).\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4802\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/dounary-340x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"165\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span>Do\u016dnar<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> family, founders of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/honar.by\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Honar<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clothing brand, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are threatened with &#8220;socially dangerous&#8221; status for an alleged photo from the march on social media, but neither the family saw the photo nor were they explained the reasons for the allegations. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Alaksiej Strelnika\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a theatrical critic and lecturer at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, was fired. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4809\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/lyosha-strelnikau-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"182\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;On November 19, I announced to the academic administration of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts about the beginning of my strike in connection with the events in the country and the way the Academy communicates with its students and professors. Today I received the order of my dismissal for absenteeism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started working at the Academy in 2013 and wanted my knowledge to benefit students and graduates. I\u2019m still convinced that we have a future, while those who are frantically engaged in repressions don\u2019t.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Natalla Lavanava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who worked at the Center for Experimental Directing at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, was also fired for having joined the general strike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work of photographer <\/span><b>Valer Viadrenka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not allowed to be exhibited in the gallery &#8220;High Place&#8221; in Minsk. The reason could not be explained, the employees of the gallery only referred to some &#8220;regulations&#8221; defining which works can be exhibited and which can\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andrej \u0160apara\u016d,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a designer and artist, member of the Belarusian Union of Designers, had to leave the country together with his wife,<\/span><b> Sviat\u0142ana Piatu\u0161kova<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also an artist. The reason for their concerns about their safety was a call from the police regarding the image Andrej posted on his personal Facebook page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4806\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/kanstanczin-yaskou-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"158\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Kanstancin Ja\u015bko\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a composer, left Belarus together with his family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he himself explained, the situation for people who condemn violence and lawlessness is becoming more dangerous every day. The last straw was the news about the restriction on leaving Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Repressions for the Symbols<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4804\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/elizaveta-bursava-340x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"150\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Jelizaveta Bursava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 87-year-old Halacaust survivor from Belarus, a multiple champion in shooting, until her retirement she worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature, on December 16 was tried under article 23.34 of Administrative Code <a href=\"https:\/\/belarusfeed.com\/87-year-old-holocaust-survivor-fined-flag-balcony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">for a white-red-white flag on her balcony<\/a> (a mass event \u2013 picketing) and fined 15 base units [\u20ac130].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three citizens from Minsk, including <\/span><b>Andrej Macuk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a well-known both in Belarus and abroad specialist in the history of the 18th century Grand Duchy of Lithuania, were sentenced to 15 days <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u045e\u0430 \u0444\u043a\u043a\u0443\u044b\u0435<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for celebrating a birthday in the yard, as they had a cake with \u201cPahonia\u201d, which is along with the white-red-white flag considered a good enough reason for arrest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Hleb \u0160apo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was the director of several performances representing Belarus at the Junior Eurovision-2015 and 2017, the adult Eurovision in 2015, as well as the assistant director at the Junior Eurovision-2010 and 2018 in Minsk, on December 15 was sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest for a white-red-white flag in his window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Alaksandr \u0160arajbak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Hlybokaje town in Viciebsk region was fined 40 basic units [\u20ac350] for the flag over his house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Pavie\u0142 Maroza\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an activist from Pastavy, received 8 days of administrative arrest for the same reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Cultural Resistance <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost <\/span><b>500 songs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were created this year by musicians from different countries under the influence of Belarusian protests. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLJ88h9ZcroOjLicn9Ipm4yRaVxuoif4Wk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">See the link<\/a> for the<\/span><b> playlist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inna Afanasijeva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Belarusian singer, released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D0TtoopUKj4&amp;feature=emb_title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a new music video <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and spoke in support of the Belarusian people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo much has happened over this time divided into &#8220;before&#8221; and &#8220;after&#8221;! But I know that Belarusians are the strongest and the most brave people who know how to love! Two years ago 5-7 individuals would appear at literary events in a warm museum, and now 50-70 people can stand in the cold at their neighbourhood gatherings: adults, children, dogs&#8230; You talk for an hour and a half &#8211; they listen, you could talk for three hours and they would listen. Longing for the authentic culture is such an expensive value, for the sake of which we have to work hard to have something to offer these people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Kacia Ivan\u010dykava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Belarusian singer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WkvRikU20Tk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the band<\/a><\/span><b> IOWA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoke about the events in Belarus, about honor and self-esteem.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can be proud of ourselves, that we know what we want. We respect ourselves, our opinion. We know that we are this country &#8211; the people who live here, work at factories, bake bread, make bricks for houses, create music and develop art, unite in spirit, write books. These people should be proud of themselves, because even in prisons, in moments of adversity, they stay true to themselves.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Maksim \u017dbanko\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, culturologist, media-analyst, cultural activist in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sn-plus.com\/2020\/12\/15\/ryov-revolyuczij-skolko-vesyat-peremeny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">his essay about the nature of revolution<\/a> says:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat do we see here and now? I have no idea how to live with this burden. I believe that a person should live, do his or her job, love their country, love their children, their land. What&#8217;s wrong with that?
