Donate to\u00a0 <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paypal.com\/donate\/?hosted_button_id=7V9UZ4PSAPAF2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><b>Donate (paypal.com)<\/b><\/a><b> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gf.me\/u\/yw5uv2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Save Our Songs campaign<\/a><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Arrests<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Maryia Kalenik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a student at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts who was detained on November 12 as accused under criminal case of organizing riots, has been recognized a political prisoner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Vital Byl, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a historian, guide, and junior researcher at the Niasvi\u017e Museum-Reserve (Niasvi\u017e Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site), author of a number of publications and books about the Radzivi\u0142\u0142 family (they were a powerful magnate family maintaining the Castle), was detained on November 22 in Bara\u016dliany district in Minsk at the rally of the districts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Natallia Bordak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an artist and poet from Niasvi\u017e, was summoned to the police department for a \u201cpreventive talk\u201d and had a report drawn up for having participated in an unauthorized mass event. She then was sentenced to 7 days in jail. Natalia is waiting for the results of the test on Covid, and if it turns out to be negative, she will be immediately taken to serve her sentence. Conditions in the Niasvi\u017e remand prison are harsh, the cells are in the basements, they are dump and don&#8217;t even have running water, and Natallia has a sore spine and joints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4513\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/alena-gironak-250x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"171\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Alena Hironak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an actress, was detained during the peaceful March of Neighbours in Minsk on November 29. On October 26, Alena was already detained and released that same night. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 1, Alena was fined 30 basic units (264 Euro).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Pressure and Dismissal, Strikes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Zmicier Sasno\u016dski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the leader of the medieval folk band <a href=\"https:\/\/staryolsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Stary Olsa<\/a>, who was detained in Kletsk on November 13 and after having spent three days in the remand prison without food and in terrible conditions, fined 30 basic units (267 Euro), had to leave Belarus as some unknown people have been looking for him and he had concerns about his safety. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4529\" style=\"width: 322px\"  class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4529 \" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/novikau-e1606827262224-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"227\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Andrej Novika\u016d<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andrej Novika\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of the leading regional theater in Mahile\u016d and the International Youth Theater Forum &#8220;M. @ rt.kontakt&#8221;, which has been gathering famous theatres from all over the world in Mahile\u016d since 2006, was fired without explanation, but in fact for not putting pressure on his employees who took part in the protests and were detained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His colleagues collected 86 signatures under a collective appeal to keep Mr. Novika\u016d as the theatre\u2019s director, but a new director has already taken over his post.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ihar Kuliko\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a poet, translator, and lecturer at the Academy of Arts, was reprimanded for &#8220;participating in unauthorized mass events in November 2020&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4534\" style=\"width: 284px\"  class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4534\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/supraczouniki-instytuta-gistoryi-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"200\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>employees of the Institute of History<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven employees of the <\/span><b>Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were fired, they are Mika\u0142ai Vo\u0142ka\u016d, Aliaksej \u0160a\u0142anda, Ka\u0107iaryna Kryvi\u010danina, Ale\u015b \u017dlutka, Andrej Radaman, Ta\u0107iana Pa\u016d\u0142o\u016dskaya and U\u0142adzimir \u0160ypila; four of them were detained during the protests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five more employees resigned in solidarity (U\u0142adimir Tuhaj, Andrej Macuk, Vadzim Aniperka\u016d, Andrej Unu\u010dak, Vasil Varonin).<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Aleh Ro\u016dda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resigns from the position of director of the Brest Music College, which he has been occupying for two years. During the presidential election, he was the chairman of the election commission at the polling station where Sviat\u0142ana \u0106ichano\u016dskaja won the majority of voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aliaksandr Pamidora\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dAvX1qd5ZIQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">radio presenter and musician<\/a>, resigned from Belarusian Radio Rocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a dissonance in hosting entertainment programs at a time when down on your street unknown people are trying to arrest your daughter. When on the streets of your city unknown people with no faces but armed, grab civilians, your neighbors, beat and torture, unjustifiably throw them in jail. When you\u2019ve been behind the bars yourself and when your colleagues and friends are there,\u201d &#8211; Aliaksandr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bcsfbel\/posts\/132952775253222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">said in a comment<\/a> to the Belarusian Culture Solidarity Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ja\u016dhen Malika\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a historian from Homiel who was fired from the Belarusian State University of Transport on November 19 after having taken part in a rally and served 5 days in jail, was drafted into the army. This experience is valuable. I realized that the system is based purely on force, violence, and the lies which they themselves spread among their employees and try to throw it at naive people. But my views have only strengthened.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ale\u015b D\u017aianisa\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a musician, journalist, and leader of the Hrodna-based Belarusian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCyMMPZh--RdQLzMsD1E-V5A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">folk punk band Dzieciuki<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was detained on 11 August as he was riding a bicycle, beaten and by pure luck released after the court hearing, told about his detention and work under current conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some songs [of the third album] we spoke directly about the situation in the country. Again, this wasn\u2019t politics. This was our civic position. In fact, it\u2019s impossible to stay aside from politics in our country. It will come to you whether you want it or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4514\" style=\"width: 340px\"  class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4514 size-gallery-thumbnails-small\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/arakelyan-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"240\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paviel Arakialian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Paviel Arakialian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a jazzman and record holder in the number of street concerts held in Minsk over the protest months, who was detained after one of such gigs on November 7 and sentenced to 15 days in jail, <a href=\"https:\/\/nashaniva.by\/?c=ar&amp;i=262892\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">shared impressions of his imprisonment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel more energy now than before my detention. I saw the mood of the people in jail, people who are, basically, held captive. They discuss what their next steps will be, how to reform health care, the police system, education. You can employ their suggestions to reform the system in the next two-three years. There are ready-made models for everything which just need to be adapted to our realities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andru\u015b Takindanh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was detained on November 7 after a concert of the band &#8220;Recha&#8221; in Minsk and spent 15 days in jail, told about his experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll the members of our band knew that it would happen sooner or later. And when the sentence was passed, we felt kind of relieved. We knew how the concerts in the neighbourhoods could end for us. We\u2019d had this feeling, like guilt, that many of our colleagues have been in jail, so we anticipated it to happen with us. Honestly, it\u2019s a low price for all the joy we received performing for people at those local community gigs. What matters is that loads of people came to our last event, and we finished it before we got detained.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZMYcY2SPGRU\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Siarhej Smatry\u010denka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, translator and philologist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/anbelkult\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ambassador of independent Belarusian culture<\/a> in the Czech Republic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about culture exclusively. At the same time, of course, we must take into account that culture can and should somehow reflect on political and social events. We have three main areas of activity: informing people in the Czech Republic about the situation in Belarus; implementing our own projects, such as exhibitions, meetings, discussions; and the third area of \u200b\u200bour activity is to be mediators in the implementation of various ideas in collaboration with other organizations.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>International Solidarity\u00a0 <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andrej Kurej\u010dyk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s new play \u201cOffended. Belarus (sia)\u201d, which describes the dramatic events in Minsk after the August 9 elections, has been published in Swedish! It was previously presented as part of the international theatrical solidarity project by the Swedish Royal Theater in Stockholm, and readings were held in a dozen cities around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proceeds will go to support Belarusian cultural community as part of the Save Our Songs campaign supported by PEN Belarus. Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ariel.nu\/bokhandel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the link to purchase<\/a> a paper copy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 50 Polish writers <a href=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/2020\/11\/25\/polskiya-pismenniki-pismennikam-belaruskim.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">have signed a <\/a><\/span><b>letter of solidarity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with their Belarusian colleagues. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the signatories is a Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the hour of trial, be sure of our solidarity. The solidarity campaign #freewordsbelarus presents \u201eThe Border\u201c from the book \u201cFrescoes\u201d by Barys <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piatrovi\u010d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Chair of The Union of Belarusian Writers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ukrainian writers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sent <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org.ua\/en\/vidkrytyj-lyst-ukrayinskyh-pysmennykiv-do-biloruskyh-koleg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">an open letter of support<\/a> to their Belarusian colleagues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe, maybe better than some, understand what the price of freedom is. Together with you, we address the international public: support free Belarusians! Help end the violence in the European country! Do not repeat the appeasement mistakes, do not be silent!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Russian band Kasta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> created a video for their song &#8220;\u0412\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438 \u0433\u0443\u043b\u044f\u0442\u044c&#8221;, which depicts the tortures of Belarusian security forces towards the detained peaceful protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aOnp0kfAr80\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Documentary drama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cBreathing together\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/oteatre.info\/belorusskij\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">is to be staged in December<\/a> at the Russian Drama Theater of Lithuania.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The play features Belarusian actors and directors who have participated in the events of the last months in Belarus. The prisoner can either borrow books from the prison library or buy them, according to the list, in a bookstore, but the books for Viktar orders aren\u2019t bought or given to him. Besides, the political prisoner did not receive any letters and postcards sent to him on his birthday on November 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Maryia Kale\u015bnikava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has been kept in Zhod\u017aina remand prison since the beginning of September, had her books taken from the prison cell.\u00a0 The books were \u201cStephen Hawking&#8217;s Universe\u201d, Yuval Noah Harari&#8217;s \u201c21 Lessons for the 21st Century\u201d, and \u201cHomo Deus. A criminal case was instituted against the protesters under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus &#8211; the organization of group actions, grossly violating public order and involving obvious disobedience to the legitimate demands of the authorities (punished with a fine, or arrest, or restriction of liberty for a term of up to three years, or imprisonment for the same term).
