On November 18, the Pastavy court issued a warning to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Taras Kruckich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, journalist and film critic, member of the BelarusDocs festival detained on November 15, was sentenced to 25 days of arrest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Ilia Jasinski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an actor of the Republican Theatre of Belarusian Drama, was beaten severely during his detention on November 15 and hospitalized with a broken spine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Mak\u015bim Kar\u017eycki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, actor of the Yakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theater, was detained on November 17 for participating in a solidarity action in memoriam Raman Bandarenka and sentenced to 10 days of arrest on November 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4433\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/photo_2020-11-17_15-32-40-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"206\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Volha \u015aem\u010danka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, head of the Literary and Drama Department of the Mahile\u016d Theater, and manager of the Belarusian Folk Dance Club, has been detained for participating in a march in memory of Raman Bandarenka on November 15 in Mahilie\u016d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier, Volha was prosecuted twice for participating in unauthorized mass events.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Edward Dmuho\u016dsky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a well-known local history expert, tour guide and public activist, was sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest for participating in a rally in memory of Raman Bandarenka on November 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Alaksandr Saka<\/b><b>\u0142<\/b><b>o<\/b><b>\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, sculptor detained on November 15, received 15 days of arrest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-gallery-thumbnails-small wp-image-4451\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/vadd_0-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"240\" \/ loading=\"lazy\">Vad\u017aim Dzmitranok<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a well-known architect and former member of Viktar Babaryka&#8217;s initiative group, was detained and severely beaten on November 15. He is now in hospital with a closed-head injury, numerous hematomas and possibly severe damage to the internal organs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is being guarded by a convoy, as he is now a suspect under Article 342 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus &#8211; the organization of group actions, grossly violating public order and involving obvious disobedience to the legitimate demands of the authorities (punished with a fine, or arrest, or restriction of liberty for a term of up to three years, or imprisonment for the same term).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Micha\u015b Mi\u0161uk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the artist who created some of the first street art in Kastry\u010dnitskaja, one of the most creative streets in Minsk, received 13 days of arrest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>D\u017aianis Waronski and Alaksandr \u0160kiranda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the buskers detained near the Yakub Kolas Square metro station in Minsk on November 20, received 12 and 13 days of administrative arrest for &#8220;participating in a cultural and entertainment event without the permission of the Minsk City Executive Committee.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Detained in Minsk during the march of the districts on November 22:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Illa \u010carapko-Samachwala\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, actor, leader of the bands &#8220;Petlya Prestrastiya&#8221; and &#8220;Cassiopeia&#8221; (received 15 days of arrest); <\/span><b>\u0106imur Rei\u017ais<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, keyboardist for Addis Abeba band and Sergey Pukst&#8217;s projects <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(received 13 days of arrest)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Jauhen Juna\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, photographer, member of the renowned art group &#8220;Belarusian Climate&#8221;, a legend of the Belarusian advertising market.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Pressure and Dismissal, Strikes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pressure on the <\/span><b>Men\u2019s Choral Group Uniya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has continued. Three members of the choral group have faced imprisonment for now, and the leading soloist <\/span><b>Aliaksandr \u0160yk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s wife Maryna was also detained and fined. Now the couple is threatened to have their seventeen-year-old adopted son taken away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Mika\u0142ai Sto\u0144ka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an actor of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, quit the theatre and recorded a video appeal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">condemning the pressure on the theater and unprecedented violence in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">12 employees of the <\/span><b>New Theater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Minsk had to quit, some by their own decision, other under pressure of the director, after their strike was found illegal in the court. By the order from the authorities, no other state theatre in Belarus is allowed to hire the actors.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Ja\u016dhien Malika\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a writer and art critic from Mahile\u016d, author of the book &#8220;Traditions of carved decor in the folk architecture of south-eastern Belarus (late 19th \u2013 first half of the 20th century)&#8221; was fired from Belarusian State University of Transport, where he worked for 16 years, for his active civil position.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three specialists of the Center for Experimental Directing of the <\/span><b>Academy of Arts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> informed the rector about the beginning of the strike on November 20. In response, the dean warned that most likely, their Center for Experimental Directing will be disbanded.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Open Letter from Belarusian Writers <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">200 Belarusian writers, including <strong>Svetlana Alexievich, Volha \u0160paraha, Dzmitry Stroca\u016d, Taciana Niadbaj<\/strong>, have signed a letter to the authorities, heads of state structures, and officials demanding to put an end to mass repressions and attacks on the people who want change, to admit their defeat and accept the will of the people!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the original letter with signatories list, <a href=\"https:\/\/lit-bel.org\/news\/khopits-gvaltu-prymitse-volyu-naroda-adkryty-list-pismennitskay-supolnastsi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">follow the link<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Cultural Resistance <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite dispersals and detentions, people continue to organize <\/span><b>activities in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> their <\/span><b>neighbourhoods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Armed riot police arrived at the gig in Sucharawa district of Minsk on November 19. The musicians managed to escape, but the security officers confiscated the equipment and donations that residents made to thank the musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Hanna \u0160arkunova<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a Belarusian singer, has dedicated a touching song to Raman Bandarenka who fell victim of the regime on November 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A charity online concert in solidarity with <\/span><b>Men\u2019s Choral Group Uniya <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">took place on 21 November. All the funds raised will be directed to support the choral group. He\u2019s been diagnosed with broken processes of two vertebrae. Ilia will have to spend the next 5-7 days in the hospital, and the fractures should heal in 1.5-2 months. In solidarity with their colleague, actors of the theatre put an empty chair in place of Ilia\u2019s character in their new show \u201cDr. Raus (\u201cRaus\u201d stands for \u2018district police department\u2019) where he was supposed to play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou can break the spine, but you won\u2019t break the spirit,\u201d Ilia says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Mika\u0142aj Chalezin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> [Nikolai Khalezin], a co-artistic director of Belarus Free Theatre, playwright and journalist, on economic sanctions and various formats of peaceful protest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cExternal pressure is essential. There is internal pressure from the people\u2019s side on the regime, and there is external pressure. If they are not in sync, there is a disbalance in one direction or the other. Imagine some official from Europe sit and watch grenades explode and people shot in Belarus&#8230; It would be wrong. It was our way to escape from the gray reality into the world of Slavic fantasy, medieval legends, and folk songs. But it feels wrong to be escaping from the reality of Belarus now .\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Mika\u0142aj<\/b> <b>Sto\u0144ka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Andrej Novik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, actors who quit the RTBD in protest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Mika\u0142aj<\/b> <b>Sto\u0144ka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cThe Ministry of Culture has always censored the theater, but after the election the pressure increased. We fought it as best we could, but the situation was getting worse. While we were coming up with ways to express our civil position, like &#8220;artistic&#8221; signs of solidarity in performances or bows, and the audience understood them, they were banned one after another. I realized I couldn\u2019t go on stage and do nothing at all. Speaking to the officials from the Ministry of Culture would be a bargain with my conscience, even if I spoke the truth outside the walls of the theater and everyone anyway knows I\u2019m not a Lukashenka\u2019s follower.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Andrej Novik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cWhen your colleague has been beaten so badly [ref. Illia Jasinski], it&#8217;s a shame to go on stage, even if it\u2019s a show you play in solidarity with him. I think the theater should have said, \u2018No! We won\u2019t work\u2019, although I know that everyone there is doing what they can for the victory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-gallery-thumbnails-small wp-image-4434\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ff72ac64-1847-42d9-b489-bd51715aec0e_cx0_cy6_cw0_w1023_r1_s-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"240\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Svetlana Alexievich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a writer, Nobel Prize Laureate, and President of PEN Belarus, in her <a href=\"https:\/\/svabod1.azureedge.net\/a\/30961073.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">interview to Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty<\/a> shared her thoughts on Belarusian protests and the existential problems of the Belarusian revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Any \u2018thaw\u2019, any leap forward is impossible to roll back completely, it\u2019s impossible to return to the past. People don\u2019t want to live as they lived before 1990, and they won\u2019t. People want to travel the world, they want for their children to study anywhere in the world. Young people, when you tell them about that life we had, simply can\u2019t believe it. But that\u2019s how we lived, quite recently. It still leaves a mark and causes consequences.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Were it not for Khrushchev&#8217;s &#8220;thaw,&#8221; there would have been no perestroika in the 1990s. But for the 90s, Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, and now our country, wouldn\u2019t have to deal with what we\u2019re dealing. Change happens slowly and sometimes, like in our case, painfully\u201d.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>International Solidarity <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4423\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/photo_2020-11-18_12-07-06-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"230\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>The \u201cembassy\u201d of independent Belarusian culture <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was launched in The Center for Experimental Theater in Brno, Czech Republic, on 17 November. The aim of the project is to spread awareness of Belarusian culture and protests against the outcome of the rigged presidential election. One of the first activities of the \u201cembassy\u201d is letters from Czech personalities to Belarusian political prisoners. They were written, for example, by Senate President Milo\u0161 Vystr\u010dil (ODS) and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Czech Philharmonic Semyon By\u010dkov.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ambassador of independent Belarusian culture is the translator <\/span><b>Siarhej Smatry\u010denka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who has Belarusian and Czech citizenship and lives in Brno.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Belarus Free Theatre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QI30nPSsL3o&amp;feature=emb_title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">received the 2020 <\/a><\/span><b>Magnitsky Human Rights Award<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for Courage Under Fire for standing up to the Lukashenka regime in the face of torture and murder, but still carry on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Finnish PEN<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and cultural community have recorded a video <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to support Belarusian colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor more than 100 days, Belarusians have been searching for justice. In these difficult circumstances, as violence and oppression continue, we want to express our support for our Belarusian colleagues and the people of Belarus in their protests for freedom.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musicians, <\/span><b>alumni of the National Gymnasium-College of the Belarusian State Academy of Music<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/antonina.kozlova\/videos\/10207718414754592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a video appeal<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0urging to free Maria Kalesnikava and all political prisoners in Belarus as well as to stop the oppression of the Belarusian people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirche-ll.de\/aktuelles\/schaufenster\/details\/nachricht\/new-belarus-art.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><b>An exhibition New Belarusian Art <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has been running at St. Marien Church in the German town L\u00fcbeck.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Miscellanious<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many witnesses tell about regular cases of the security forces taking away <\/span><b>white-red-white flags<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the protests, spreading them on the floor of the police vans and forcing the detainees to walk on them, while policemen themselves step on the flags on purpose as well as throw them in the trash.
