{"id":4317,"date":"2020-11-17T09:42:10","date_gmt":"2020-11-17T09:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=4317"},"modified":"2020-11-24T13:52:45","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T13:52:45","slug":"vypusk-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2020\/11\/17\/vypusk-6.html","title":{"rendered":"Newsletter #6: Belarusian Culture in Times of Political Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Deaths<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4335\" style=\"text-align: justify\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/raman-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"192\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Raman Bandarenka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, died on November 12,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fell victim of the bloody regime. On the night of November 11, Raman went down to the yard of the house he lived in to stop the masked policemen from cutting off the white-red-white ribbons which the residents had used to decorate their yard. Police have been raiding neighbourhoods all over Belarus regularly, colliding with the locals, attacking their peaceful gatherings, and arresting people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That night, Raman was caught and beaten by six masked policemen, kidnapped and then battered mercilessly on the way to and at the police station. Later that night he was brought to hospital in a coma. He didn\u2019t survive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raman was an artist by education, he taught children at the events organized by the local community to draw.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The whole Belarus is grieving over this death, and there\u2019s been a wave of solidarity in towns and cities, on the streets, at plants, in the hospitals and universities; this has been a deep wound for all of us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Arrests<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">November<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9-11 court hearings took place for the detained the week before. Musicians from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dharmannofficial\/videos\/539337050336118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the band <\/a><\/span><b>Recha<\/b>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/andrus.takindang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><b> Andrus Takindanh<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><b> Ihar Asidchanka, Kanstantsin Lisetski, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><b> Leanid Paulionak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received 15 days of administrative arrest each, so did producer and director <\/span><b>Yauhen Shapchyts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><b>Alies Zhlutka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one of the leading Belarusian historians and linguists, the only specialist on Medieval Latin in Belarus, and <\/span><b>Uladzislau Stalmakhou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">designer and artist, have been sentenced to 10 days of arrest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An actor and TV host <\/span><b>Alyaksandar Zhdanovich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s sentence is 9 days of arrest, and <\/span><b>Mikhail Tarelka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a scholar of Belarusian Tatars, the only specialist on Tatar manuscripts in medieval Belarus, received 5 days in jail. <\/span><b>Nasta Stalmakhova<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, designer, was released with a fine of 20 basic units (180 Euro) after having spent two days in Zhodzina detention centre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4345\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/dzyadok-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"209\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Mikola Dziadok<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an anarchist movement activist, former political prisoner, laureate of PEN Belarus award in 2017 for <a href=\"https:\/\/radicalbook.tilda.ws\/colours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the book <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Colors of the Parallel World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> written in jail, political blogger, was arrested on November, 12 as a suspect on \u201cpublic order offence case&#8221;. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His house was searched, and Mikola himself was beaten severely, after which he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DLO8C2tg9QI&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">was forced to speak to the camera<\/a> for the official channel of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs of Belarus.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Zmitser Sasnouski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the leader of the medieval <a href=\"https:\/\/staryolsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">folk band <\/a><\/span><b>Stary Olsa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was detained in Kletsk on November 13, while standing in a solidarity chain; he spent three days in the remand prison, deprived of food; on November 16, Zmitser was fined 30 basic<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">units <em>(267 Euro)<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Minsk,<\/span><b> Ihar Andreyeu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an actor at the M. Gorky National Academic Drama Theater and <\/span><b>Paviel Hontsa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dIkpwltCkiM&amp;feature=emb_title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the Men\u2019s Choral Group <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uniya<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0have been detained. <\/span><b>Paviel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has been released after having spent three days in Akrestsina detention centre and been fined 810 BYN <em>(267 Euro)<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Among 1000 detained on November, 15, there are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Aliaksandr Tabolski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a guitarist and manager of Naviband;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Barys Pastarnak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, publisher. He\u2019s published books by such Belarusian writers as Svetlana Alexievich, Viktar Martsinovich, and others. Barys was charged with damaging police property, but he suggested that the investigators should watch the footage the riot police took. As a result, the riot policeman refused to testify and Barys was released.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Aliaksandr Sakalou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, sculptor. He created the statuette for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Michal Aniempadysta\u016b Award<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> given by PEN Belarus for the best Belarusian-language book cover design.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Ryhor Laikou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a musician from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCZGomgFBQiJbU8ZhG7blAUg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">PyLai band<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0was beaten severely and got to hospital with head trauma;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Katsiaryna Sumarava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, artist;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Mikhas Mishuk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the artist who created one of the first street art in Kastrychnitskaya, one of the most creative streets in Minsk;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Yauhen Attsetski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/attsetski_photo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">photographer<\/a>;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Ilia Yasinski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an actor of the Republican Theatre of Belarusian Drama, beaten severely, hospitalized;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Siarhey Hadziayeu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a DJ at Radio Hrodna;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Kanstantsin Charuhin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, writer who has disability group 1; in 2010 he was detained and charged for \u201cclapping hands\u201d, which was impossible because he\u2019d lost his hands several years prior to that;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Taras Krutskih<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, member of the BelarusDocs festival, journalist, film critic, administrator of<a href=\"http:\/\/t.me\/holybelawood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> the channel about Belarusian cinema \u201cSacred Belawood\u201d<\/a>;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Tatsiana Haurylchyk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, director, documentary filmmaker (released 15 hours after detention).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>According to the witnesses, the detainees who spoke Belarusian, were marked with paint and then beaten.<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Pressure and Dismissal<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Ihar Kulikou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, translator, poet and laureate of several awards founded or co-founded by PEN Belarus, a lecturer at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, was summoned to the commission at work and made to write an explanatory note about his participation in the protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Katsyaryna Vadanosava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a singer and former TV presenter on Belarus-3 TV channel, was summoned to the police department for a \u201cconversation\u201d. When Katsyaryna refused to do that, she was told that they could come and &#8220;take&#8221; her near her house and send her children to a shelter. Katsyaryna is one of those state television employees who resigned during the August strikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4364 \" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pytleva-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"197\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Katsiaryna Pytlieva,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> an ex TV presenter from Belarusian state television company, has been threatened with administrative case for a publication on her social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>The picture from Katsiaryna&#8217;s publication<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On November 9, three more students were expelled from the Academy of Arts, they are <\/span><b>Raman Davydousky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Tsimafey Sheleh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Uladislau Patapchyk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the beginning of November, more than 140 students, as well as at least 15 professors, have been dismissed from Belarusian universities for their active civil position and participation in the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Uladzimir and Nadziezhda Irdorath<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, musicians of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCRGFz04MU0RJ50mP6cn39XQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the band Irdorath <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and pedagogs, were fired from the educational centre they had worked for years on November 9 for their civic stance and participation in the street concerts for the communities in Minsk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4334\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/perfomans_ulyany_nevzorovoi_-340x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"204\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ulyana Niauzorava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the artist who <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/euroradio\/9596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">had a powerful performance <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(the sign says, &#8220;This sign can be the ground for my detention&#8221;) in the Minsk metro in October, has had her apartment searched. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ulyana said that the search was connected with the criminal case opened against her sister, an activist and student at the Belarusian Academy of Arts <\/span><b>Maryia Kalenik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On November 12, twelve employees of the<\/span><b> New Theater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Minsk officially joined the strike.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are claimed to have caused a loss of 15,000 BYN (4950 Euro) for the allegedly disrupted performance and are being sued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Yahor Prystauka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a renowned professor at the Belarusian State University who has taught ancient languages and literature at a number of faculties, including the Schools of Philology, Law, Chemistry and Biology as well as Theology, is fired for taking part in solidarity actions with students and his colleagues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Anna Zlatkouskaya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a writer who regularly participated in women&#8217;s marches and wrote several texts that became base for touching videos (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=55IQWVJp1zg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">&#8220;I&#8217;m tired, mom, to answer the calls&#8221;<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2o7bd3g3HJM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t wait for home, I&#8217;m in a police van&#8221;<\/a>), had to leave Minsk for Vilnius as she feared criminal prosecution. Before that, Anna received a summons from the police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Cultural Resistance <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Residents of one Minsk neighborhood expressed their solidarity with the actor and former host of one of the warmest TV shows for children on Belarusian TV <\/span><b>Alyaksandar Zhdanovich <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sentenced to 9 days of arrest. On the house&#8217;s wall they have made a projection of the illustration, where Alexander is depicted as his character Maliavanych &#8211; the host of TV-program &#8220;Lullaby&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4344\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/gadzinniki-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"206\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The strike committee received a wonderful parcel, wrist watches which <\/span><b>Vyachaslau Sikora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a theater and film actor, director, screenwriter and &#8220;citizen of his country&#8221;, presented in solidarity with the workers who joined the strike. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He wrote that he also came up with the design for another series, &#8220;PRISONER 2020&#8221;, for those who\u2019ve been in jail.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Free Choir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dedicated their <a href=\"https:\/\/music.youtube.com\/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kgP8gDSdnmpkI7hCcrEAEzfeFX-7bFD8s,\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">album \u201cWorthy Songs\u201d<\/a> to <\/span><b>Raman Bandarenka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0a band <\/span><b>Stary Olsa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/music.MedicurSmeur.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a song<\/a>. <\/span><b>Pit Paulau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DOb3FD_eOIs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">dedicated a song<\/a> to Raman Bandarenka and all the Belarusians who took to streets despite the fear and died without seeing the victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Artist <\/span><b>Ania Redko <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dedicated her new illustration to Roman, and designer <\/span><b>Uladzimir Tseler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 two of his new posters. <\/span><\/p>\n      <div class=\"fotorama\" data-width=\"100%\" data-ratio=\"810\/540\" data-nav=\"thumbs\" data-thumbwidth=\"100\" data-thumbheight=\"60\" data-allowfullscreen=\"native\">\r\n          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/czesler_bandarenku.jpg\" data-full=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/czesler_bandarenku.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" alt=\"\">\r\n          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/czesler-bandarenku.jpg\" data-full=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/czesler-bandarenku.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" alt=\"\">\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><em><b>Uladzimir Tseler&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> new posters<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Belarusian performer group Exorcist Gesamtkunstwerk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AE2sTeRQCRs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a project <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Actions Against the Wall <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with this video,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which has gone viral, and with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/367082004457696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">their new piece<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they encourage artists from all over the world to join in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn fact, what is happening in Belarus today is the struggle of society against the concrete wall of the repressive state system. They say independence requires sacrifice, and Belarus didn\u2019t sacrifice enough in 1991. It sounds harsh, but nonetheless. Only a slap could start this process.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><b>Belarusian Culture Solidarity Foundation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">helps the fired art workers to find a new job (which, unfortunately, is complicated by the conditions of the pandemic), register travel documents, and look for psychological help if necessary. When one needs to pay a fine, the person is helped to get in touch with the right fund. It revives the ugliest practices, for example, denunciations. After that, they beat me again with a truncheon on my left leg, saying, \u2018Where will you be next time?\u2019 I replied that I would be at home, and they took me to the police van.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the van Eryk was marked with a marker and hit on his head; at the police department he was threatened with more beatings and rape, and completely different circumstances of the detention were recorded in the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eryk also found out that he was a suspect under Part 1 of Art. 342 of the Criminal Code: preparation or active participation in actions that grossly violate public order. According to Eryk, they tried to accuse him of hitting a riot policeman or throwing stones at the Tsentralny District Department of Internal Affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align:
