{"id":4066,"date":"2020-10-27T09:43:39","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T09:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=4066"},"modified":"2020-11-06T15:20:24","modified_gmt":"2020-11-06T15:20:24","slug":"kulturny-supracziu-padzei-za-tydzen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2020\/10\/27\/kulturny-supracziu-padzei-za-tydzen.html","title":{"rendered":"Newsletter #3: Belarusian Culture in Times of Political Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Belarusian Culture Solidarity Foundation<\/strong> and 22 cultural figures<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sbgHK4uazCQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> have recorded a video<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0aiming to encourage art workers to take the people&#8217;s ultimatum seriously and support the National Strike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Round Table for Representatives of Creative Organizations and Initiatives<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 24, the Belarusian PEN Center i<a href=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/2020\/10\/26\/chas-dzejnichacz-supolna-kaardynaczyjnaya-sustrecha-pradstaunikou-tvorchyh-arganizaczyj-i-iniczyyatyvau.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">nitiated a round table<\/a> in Minsk.\u00a0 The participants discussed the most acute problems faced by Belarusian creative organizations and their members in the context of the socio-political crisis, as well as possible and necessary joint actions. The participants also support the work of PEN Belarus on monitoring and analysing violations of rights and freedoms in relation to art workers and activists, and agree it is essential to maintain communication and act together.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Statement of the Belarusian PEN Center and the Union of Belarusian Writers on the repressions against freedom of thought and expression in Belarus<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2020\/10\/22\/zayava-belaruskaga-pen-czentra-i-sayuza-belaruskih-pismennikau-u-suvyazi-z-represiyami-supracz-svabody-dumki-i-tvorchasczi-u-belarusi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">their joint statement<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Belarusian PEN Center and The Union of Belarusian Writers emphasize that repressions against the intellectual and creative elite are purposeful actions of the regime which seeks to prevent the exercise of the right to freedom of speech and thought, as well as the right to peaceful assembly and demonstration guaranteed by the Constitution. <\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Arrest, Discrimination, and Job Dismissal<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ihar Bantsar <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Mister X)<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a well-known activist and musician was arrested in Hrodna on October 20. Ihar might be accused of organizing or actively participating in mass riots (Article 342 of the Criminal Code of Belarus).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The musician and activist had previously served 10 days of administrative arrest (detained on August 24) during which he went on hunger strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Andrei Luhin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Alena Palachanskaya,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> musicians of the LAUDANS band, were arrested on October 19, after having performed in the neighbourhood of Angarskaya Street in Minsk. On October 21, they both were sentenced to 15 days of arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, on October 16, Andrei and Alena were detained in Senitsa, a small town in Minsk region, where they were going to play a concert, and were released after a conversation with the police officers who had suspected them of being drunk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to help the band to buy new equipment, as theirs was confiscated during a street rally on August 20, <a href=\"https:\/\/gf.me\/u\/yw5uv2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">follow the link<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4072 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"205\" \/ loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stroczev-by-roman-ekimov-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Dzmitry Strotsau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a poet, activist, and member of PEN Belarus was arrested on October 21. Dzmitry disappeared in the morning, and his relatives couldn\u2019t get any information about his whereabouts until the next morning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 22, he was sentenced to 13 days of arrest. Dzmitry Strotsau took part in protests against the election fraud and wrote about it openly. He spoke about the situation in the country in his work as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Andrei Karalevich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, casting director of the Belroskino studio, producer, director and teacher at the Academy of Arts, was arrested on October 21 and sentenced to 14 days in jail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Eryc Arlou-Shymkus,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> musician,<\/span><b> and Aliaksandra Babkova, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film director and camera woman, were detained during the Sunday protest march on October 25. Aliaksandra was fined 7 basic units (63 Euro), Eryc was sentenced to 12 days of arrest on October 27.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 21, <\/span><b>Volha Semchanka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head of the Literary and Drama Department of the Mahileu Theater, and manager of the Belarusian Folk Dance Club, was tried for participating in two peaceful marches on August 30 and September 6 in Mahileu and fined 10 basic units (90 Euro). Earlier, Volha spent seven days in jail for participating in an \u201cunauthorized demonstration\u201d on the same dates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday\u2019s sentence looks even milder, compared to the previous one. Still, there should be no such cases at all. Those taking part in the peaceful protest marches don\u2019t violate anything. Among the participants there are women, children, and elderly people. Do you become a criminal when you walk down the street with flowers and ribbons? This is our Constitutional right\u201d, Volha said after the trial.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employees of the Mahileu Regional Drama and Comedy Theater in Babruisk who dare to openly criticize the actions of the authorities, are under pressure. <\/span><b>Vadzim Babinich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an actor, sang the song &#8220;Mury&#8221; (Belarusian for \u201cwalls\u201d, it has been one of the most popular protest songs in Belarus) at the theatre and received a punitive reprimand, three staff reports, and condemnation from his colleagues. After that, one of the performances with Vadzim&#8217;s participation was canceled. He and his wife Natalia &#8211; an artist &#8211; left the official trade union (these unions support the regime and not the employees), and now she is under pressure. Vadzim and Natalia are concerned that they may be fired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4074 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/kraina-zamkau.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"230\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n\n<p><b>The Land of Castles Foundation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is engaged in cultural activities, including organizing and running guided tours around Belarus, has been under pressure for several months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aliaksandr Varykish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the director of the foundation, said that as a journalist he was helping the press office of the Coordination Council, after which the foundation and Aliaksandr\u2019s personal property have been inspected by the State Audit Office, the Tax Service, the Committee on Labor, Employment and Social Protection, district services, nature protection, etc. Aliaksandr is convinced that this is politically motivated pressure and <a href=\"http:\/\/zamak.by\/gryunvald\/sos_druzya_sestry-bratya_belarusy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">asks for support<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Voice of Belaurusian Culture<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re all strings of one musical instrument. And millions of these open hearts will march on, to the light, and will never stop\u201d, they comment on their new song which is to be released soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b><b>Cultural Resistance\u00a0<\/b><\/b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4070 alignleft\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" src=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dvary-340x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"196\" \/ loading=\"lazy\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>activities in the neighbourhoods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in cities throughout Belarus continue, despite the fact that police and riot police regularly raid the events people organize for themselves, and the administrators of the community chats are arrested and charged with criminal articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>International solidarity\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An<\/span><b> auction in support of the Belarusian protest movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was organized in Poland. It took place online, thanks to cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3obiNZr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the portal artinfo.pl<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The funds raised will be used for psychological and medical help to those injured during the peaceful protests, fines for the detained, support for the striking workers and those fired for their views, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 22, an <\/span><b>international interactive concert of solidarity #womenunited<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in support of the Belarusian democratic movement and Maryia Kalesnikova took place on the stage of Theaterhaus in Stuttgart.
