The number of banned books climbed to 375.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poet, singer and musician <\/span><b>Siarhiej Micha\u0142ok<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sentenced in absentia to four years in prison in the politically motivated criminal case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new criminal case was opened against political prisoner, photographer <\/span><b>Vadzim Zdaraviena\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A court in Belarus began hearing in absentia the politically motivated case against <\/span><b>Kaciaryna Mankievi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vocalist of the band <\/span><b>Dymna Lotva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former political prisoner and author of the prison memoir <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And All of This Is Within You: A Collection of Prison Essays<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Miko\u0142a Statkievi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stated that the stroke he suffered in prison had been deliberately induced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A further nine books were banned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Instagram page <\/span><b>VOLNY CHOR <\/b><b>| FREE CHOIR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was designated as &#8220;extremist&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intellectual quiz events were cancelled in Hrodna.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u0406. Criminal prosecution of cultural figures, authors, and performers<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> On 4 August, it became known that the Minsk City Court had handed down an in-absentia sentence in the politically motivated criminal case against poet, singer and musician <\/span><b>Siarhiej Micha\u0142ok<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sentencing him to four years&#8217; imprisonment in a minimum-security penal colony. Micha\u0142ok was convicted under Part 1 of Article 130 of the Criminal Code (incitement of hatred or enmity) and Part 1 of Article 368 (insulting the president). In 2025, Belarus placed him on its wanted list. He lived in Ukraine from 2015 until relocating to Estonia in 2022. He continues to tour across Europe and has publicly expressed support for Ukraine. He performs some of the best-known songs by his bands Lyapis Trubetskoy and Brutto in Ukrainian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> On 6 August, it became known that a new criminal case had been opened against political prisoner and photographer <\/span><b>Vadzim Zdaraviena\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He faces charges under several provisions of the Criminal Code: Part 1 of Article 342 (organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order), Part 1 of Article 130 (incitement of racial, national, religious or other social hatred or discord), and Parts 1 and 2 of Article 363-1 (unlawful handling of information relating to private life and personal data).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> On 14 August, the Minsk City Court began hearing in absentia the politically motivated criminal case against <\/span><b>Kaciaryna Mankievi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vocalist of the band <\/span><b>Dymna Lotva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She is charged under Part 1 of Article 289-1 (propaganda of terrorism), Part 1 of Article 290-1 (financing terrorist activities), Parts 1 and 2 of Article 361-4 (facilitating extremist activities), Article 366-1 (threat of violence against the president), and Part 1 of Article 368 (insulting the president).<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u0406\u0406. Banned books<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> On 4 August, it became known that the Kastry\u010dnicki District Court of Minsk had designated three books as &#8220;extremist materials&#8221;: the collections <\/span><b><i>Merciless Little Waltz<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><i>Night. And You&#8230;<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Alaksandr Bal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><i>Finish Off the Survivors: The Origins and Meaning of Russian Trumpism<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Oleh Kashin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All three books were published in 2026. Alaksandr Bal is a Belarusian singer-songwriter. The banned collections contain his anti-war songs and socially engaged lyrics. Russian journalist Oleh Kashin&#8217;s book focuses on the Russo-Ukrainian war and global politics. The decision is significant for several reasons. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bannedbooks.penbelarus.org\/en\/04-august-2026-three-new-items-on-the-list-of-extremist-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available at bannedbooks.penbelarus.org<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> On 12 August, a further six books were designated as &#8220;extremist materials&#8221;<\/span><b>: <\/b><b><i>The Rise of Belarus<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Piotr Rudko\u016dski;<\/b><b><i> The Young Front Generation: A History of the Youth Born in 1970-1985<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Pavie\u0142 Sieviaryniec<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b><i>The Political System of the Republic of Belarus<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>U\u0142adzimir Ro\u016dda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b><i>The Price of Freedom, or the Confessions of an Opposition Politician<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Siarhiej Skrabiec<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b><i>Byka\u016d on Radio Liberty<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and <\/span><b><i>Non-Violence and Belarus<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is already the fourth book by former political prisoner Pavie\u0142 Sieviaryniec to be banned. His books <\/span><b><i>A Heart of Stone<\/i><\/b><b>, <\/b><b><i>I Love Belarus: 200 Phenomena of the National Idea<\/i><\/b><b>, and <\/b><b><i>Belarusalim. Book Two. Heart of Light<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had previously been added to the list of &#8220;extremist materials&#8221;. The editor and compiler of <\/span><b><i>Byka\u016d on Radio <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liberty is <\/span><b>Siarhiej Navum\u010dyk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose books <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninety-Two<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninety-Three<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had already been designated as &#8220;extremist&#8221;. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bannedbooks.penbelarus.org\/en\/14-august-2026-six-new-books-on-the-list-of-extremist-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available at <\/span><b>bannedbooks.penbelarus.org<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>III. Conditions in places of incarceration<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> Former political prisoner and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And All of This Is Within You: A Collection of Prison Essays<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Miko\u0142a Statkievi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stated that the stroke he suffered in prison had been deliberately induced: &#8220;The stroke was deliberately caused. They denied me medication that was vital to my survival.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> The eyesight of cultural scholar <\/span><b>Vac\u0142a\u016d Are\u0161ka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is serving an eight-year prison sentence in a politically motivated case, has deteriorated so severely in detention that he now has to feel his way around the prison unit by touch.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>IV. Cultural projects&#8217; social media designated as \u201cextremist\u201d<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Instagram page <\/span><b>VOLNY CHOR <\/b><b>| FREE CHOIR <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was designated as &#8220;extremist&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>V. Cancellation of cultural and entertainment events<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several intellectual quiz events scheduled for August were cancelled in Hrodna. The organisers of <\/span><b>VSpomnit VSio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Smuzi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Mazhabojnia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Tuc-Tuc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Ugadaj Melodiyu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Matro\u0161ka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced that their quiz events would not take place.
