Criminal prosecution of cultural figures, authors, and performers<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> On 17 October, it became known that <\/span><b>Anatol Volski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Belarusian-language DJ from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u015bcis\u0142a\u016d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was convicted under Article 361-4 (Parts 1 and 2) of the Criminal Code (facilitating extremist activity), reportedly within the framework of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belaruski Hajun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> case. Volski, a musician and local cultural organiser, managed the district\u2019s centralised club system, organised festivals and discos. It is not known precisely what sentence he received \u2013 restricted freedom in an open-type institution or imprisonment in a penal colony.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Belaruski Hajun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an independent monitoring project that tracked the movement of Russian troops and military equipment across Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> On 18 October, information emerged that historian and tour guide <\/span><b>Anton Arciuch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also convicted under Article 361-4 (Parts 1 and 2) (facilitating extremist activity), likewise believed to be within the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belaruski Hajun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> case. The exact nature of his sentence \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restricted freedom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imprisonment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 remains unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> On 30 October, it was reported that <\/span><b>Vasil Kra\u016d\u010duk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a comedian from Pinsk detained earlier in St. Petersburg, had been extradited to Belarus, where he is being held in a pre-trial detention centre. On 7 February 2022, the Pinsk District Court sentenced Kra\u016d\u010duk to two years in home confinement under Article 369 of the Criminal Code (insulting a government official). The case stemmed from a comment he posted in the Telegram channel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKarateli Belarusi\u201d (Punishers of Belarus)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding an employee of the juvenile inspection service. Three months after sentencing, Kra\u016d\u010duk ceased all contact and was declared a wanted person. On 17 December 2024, the Pinsk District Court decided to replace his previous sentence of restricted freedom without confinement in an open-type correctional institution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u0406\u0406. Persecution for using the Belarusian language in places of incarceration<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video operator and former political prisoner <\/span><b>Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d \u0141azara\u016d<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described how the administration of Correctional Colony No. 15 imposes additional punishment for using the Belarusian language: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I was brought to the head of the colony, I started speaking Belarusian, but I was thrown out. This happened five times in a row.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>III. Repression against cultural and educational initiatives<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> On 20 October, the Miory District Court of the Viciebsk Region ruled that information published on the Telegram channel of the first Belarusian online bookstore in the United States, <\/span><b><i>\u201cLitarka\u201d<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/litarka.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/litarka.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), was designated as \u201cextremist materials\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> On 29 October, the Pru\u017eany District Court labelled as \u201cextremist materials\u201d the YouTube channel<\/span><b> \u201cBud\u017ama Dzieciam\u201d (Let\u2019s Be for Children)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which hosted five episodes of a Belarusian-language puppet video series titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adventures of the Little Mice.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cextremist list\u201d was also expanded to include the cultural and educational TikTok page<\/span><b> \u201cBudzma_razam,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the social media community<\/span><b> \u201cBud\u017ama Belarusami! (Let\u2019s Be Belarusians!)\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odnoklassniki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>\u201cBudzma\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donation page on an online fundraising platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b> IV. Persecution of families of cultural figures who have left Belarus<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 22 October, it became known that police officers interrogated the relatives of <\/span><b>Valer Rusielik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a journalist, cultural blogger, poet, and songwriter. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey ask about me, about my family. At the same time, they don\u2019t explain the reasons for their visits or questions,\u201d Ruselik wrote on his Facebook page. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valer Ruselik runs the YouTube channel \u201cDaroha\u201d, where he discusses current events in Belarus and publishes animations and songs. He also publishes content on the TikTok channel \u201cVytok\u201d dedicated to Belarusian culture. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July 2023, his social media pages were designated as \u201cextremist materials\u201d. On 2 August 2023, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDaroha\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project was officially labelled an \u201cextremist formation\u201d.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2024, a politically motivated criminal case was initiated against Valer Rusielik.<\/span><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of 31 October 2025, at least 154 cultural figures, including 33 writers, were not free \u2013 either imprisoned or in home confinement.
