{"id":19580,"date":"2025-07-01T08:21:47","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T08:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=19580"},"modified":"2025-07-16T17:11:45","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:11:45","slug":"hronika-parushennyau-pravou-chalaveka-u-sfery-kultury-15-30-chervenya-2025-goda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2025\/07\/01\/hronika-parushennyau-pravou-chalaveka-u-sfery-kultury-15-30-chervenya-2025-goda.html","title":{"rendered":"Chronicle of human rights violations in the sphere of culture (15-30 June 2025)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>As of 30 June 2025, at least 156 cultural figures, including 38 writers, were not free \u2013 either imprisoned or in home confinement.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Aleh Chamienka, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the leader of the folk-modern band <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pa\u0142ac<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lecturer, composer, cultural promoter, and producer, was detained in Minsk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Volha Sitnik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known as <\/span><b>Homelka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), administrator of the Belarusian Wikipedia, has been in prison since 8 May due to a politically motivated case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maksim Lepu\u0161enka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, editor and contributor to the Belarusian Wikipedia, is being held in pre-trial detention centre No. 1 under politically motivated criminal charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ivan (Jan) Maroza\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Wikipedia contributor, was detained again under Article 368 of the Criminal Code (insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English teacher <\/span><b>Alena Brazinskaja<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was convicted in a politically motivated criminal trial under Article 342 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code (organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In H\u0142ybokaje, researcher <\/span><b>Pavie\u0142 \u0141a\u016drynovi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who studies repressions against Orthodox priests, is facing criminal prosecution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dance coach <\/span><b>Alaksandra (Aleksa) A\u0161urka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was convicted under Article 342 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code (organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historian and head of the \u201cMindo\u016dh\u201d club, <\/span><b>Aleh Zielanko,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was convicted under Article 361-4 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code (facilitating extremist activity).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A road sign indicating <\/span><b>\u201cThe sites of mass executions of victims of political repression in Kurapaty, 1930\u20131940\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has disappeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><b><\/b><b>I. Criminal prosecution of cultural figures, authors, and performers<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b><\/b><b>1. Volha Sitnik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the administrator of the Belarusian Wikipedia (also known as <\/span><b>Homelka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), has been in prison since 8 May<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under politically motivated charges. On that day, she was sentenced to ten days of administrative arrest. Volha Sitnik is the mother of three underage children. Since 2009, she has written Wikipedia articles on Belarusian traditional culture and nature. Volha was detained for the first time on 17 April 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> On 16 June, information emerged about the politically motivated sentence for <\/span><b>Alena Brazinskaja<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an English teacher and tutor at the \u201c\u010cystaja hramatyka\u201d language centre. She was convicted under Article 342 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code (organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> On 20 June, it was reported that <\/span><b>Pavie\u0142 \u0141a\u016drynovi\u010d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a local history researcher from H\u0142ybokaje, came under criminal prosecution. He studied the church life in the H\u0142ybokaje district, participated in editing church directories and books about new martyrs killed by communists and Nazis. He was convicted under Article 342 of the Criminal Code <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> On 24 June, it was reported that dance coach <\/span><b>Alaksandra (Aleksa) A\u0161urka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was convicted under Article 342 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code (organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> In June, information emerged that <\/span><b>Maksim Lepu\u0161enka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an editor and contributor to the Belarusian Wikipedia, was being held in pre-trial detention centre No. 1 under politically motivated charges. He writes about history, culture, literature, and biographies of contemporary Belarusian writers. Maksim was detained in Minsk on 15 May 2025 and charged under Article 342 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On 17 June<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025, he was recognised as a political prisoner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> In June 2025, it was reported that Wikipedia contributor <\/span><b>Ivan (Jan) Maroza\u016d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was detained under Article 368 (insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus) and placed in pre-trial detention centre No. 1. On 28 April 2023, Minsk\u2019s Pier\u0161amajski District Court sentenced him to one and a half years in a minimum-security penal colony under Article 342 (Part 1) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(organising, preparing or actively participating in actions that grossly violate public order) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for taking part in peaceful protests against the falsification of the 2020 election results. He served his sentence at Correctional Colony No. 17 and was released on 17 April 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>7.<\/strong> On 29 June, information emerged that historian and head of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindo\u016dh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> club, <\/span><b>Aleh Zielanko,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was imprisoned under politically motivated charges. In December 2024, he was twice punished under Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offences (distribution of extremist materials). In 2025, the Brest Regional Court convicted him under Article 361-4 (Part 1) of the Criminal Code (facilitating extremist activity).<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>II. Detentions\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 30 June, reports emerged that <\/span><b>Aleh Chamienka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leader of the folk-modern band <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pa\u0142ac<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lecturer, composer, cultural promoter, and producer, was detained in Minsk. It remains unknown whether his detention occurred under an administrative or criminal case.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>III. Destruction of memorial sites<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A road sign marking the location <strong>\u201cThe sites of mass executions of victims of political repression in the Kurapaty forest (1930\u20131940)\u201d<\/strong> has disappeared near Minsk. Kurapaty is a site of mass executions during Stalin\u2019s regime.
