Furkan Karabay is behind bars and on trial in T\u00fcrkiye merely for carrying out his job. As we command the power of young writers in generating change, we stand with Karabay in his pursuit for the truth and urge an end to his relentless targeting. T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s mounting onslaught on press freedom must end once and for all\u2019. <\/em>Said Burhan Sonmez, PEN International President.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\"><strong>28<\/strong> <strong>May 2025 \u2013 The authorities of T\u00fcrkiye should immediately and unconditionally release journalist and author Furkan Karabay and stop their judicial harassment, PEN International said today. Karabay\u2019s previous baseless conviction should be overturned and journalists allowed to do their work free from persecution.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1748422524562_4256\" class=\"sqs-block horizontalrule-block sqs-block-horizontalrule\" data-block-type=\"47\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1748422524562_4347\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\" data-border-radii=\"{\"topLeft\":{\"unit\":\"px\",\"value\":0.0},\"topRight\":{\"unit\":\"px\",\"value\":0.0},\"bottomLeft\":{\"unit\":\"px\",\"value\":0.0},\"bottomRight\":{\"unit\":\"px\",\"value\":0.0}}\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\">\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">On 15 May 2025, police arbitrarily detained Furkan Karabay at his home in Istanbul. Karabay was brought before a court later that day and officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishminute.com\/2025\/05\/15\/turkish-journalist-arrested-due-to-reports-on-investigations-into-opposition-mayors\/?r=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">arrested<\/a> on suspicion of \u2018making targets of those who were tasked to combat terrorism\u2019 under Article 6\/1 of Anti-Terror Law No. 3713, which carries up to three years in prison, and \u2018insulting\u2019 T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan under Article 299 of the Penal Code, which carries up to four years in prison. Karabay <a href=\"https:\/\/kisadalga.net\/haber\/gundem\/tutuklu-gazeteci-furkan-karabaydan-19-mayis-mesaji-126623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">declined<\/a> to file a defence in court, denouncing the judiciary\u2019s apparent determination to \u2018chase down and imprison 20-year-old students who were exercising their constitutional rights\u2019 to assembly and peaceful protest. The charges against Karabay stem from his social media posts relating to the detention in March 2025 of Istanbul\u2019s mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/news\/trkiye-crackdown-on-peaceful-expression-condemned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">alarming crackdown<\/a> that ensued. Karabay\u2019s X account was blocked in T\u00fcrkiye after his arrest. He is currently being held in Marmara prison, Silivri, alongside young protesters from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mlsaturkey.com\/en\/three-separate-sarachane-protest-trials-open-in-one-day-with-allegations-of-arrest-and-offense-dates-matching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sara\u00e7hane<\/a> district of Istanbul. His lawyers challenged his pre-trial detention order, yet the court rejected the petition within one day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">Furkan Karabay has been repeatedly targeted by the authorities of T\u00fcrkiye on account of his journalistic work in recent years. In April 2025, a court in Istanbul <a href=\"https:\/\/mlsaturkey.com\/en\/journalist-furkan-karabay-sentenced-in-defamation-case-filed-by-erdogan-family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">found<\/a> him guilty of defamation and \u2018insulting the president\u2019 in relation to his reporting on claims of corruption against the president\u2019s family and handed him a deferred prison sentence totaling nearly two years. Karabay further stands <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2025\/05\/turkish-journalist-furkan-karabay-arrested-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">accused<\/a> in a separate case of \u2018making targets of those who were tasked to combat terrorism,\u2019 \u2018insulting a public servant,\u2019 and \u2018knowingly distributing misleading information to the public,\u2019 after reporting on the arrest of an opposition mayor. His trial was yet to start at the time of writing. In October 2024, Furkan was <a href=\"https:\/\/mlsaturkey.com\/tr\/gazeteci-furken-karabay-11-gun-tutuklu-kaldigi-davadan-beraat-etti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">acquitted<\/a> of defamation and \u2018making targets of those who were tasked to combat terrorism\u2019 for his reporting on allegations of corruption in the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">PEN International has long urged the authorities of T\u00fcrkiye to end the arbitrary arrest and detention of journalists and writers simply on the basis of the content of their writing, to repeal all criminal defamation and insult laws, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/news\/trkiye-surge-in-press-freedom-violations-condemned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">safeguard<\/a> the vital role of journalism in fostering dialogue and debate on matters of public interest. With university students at the forefront of the protests, PEN International and its newly established Young Writers Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/committee-news\/whats-happening-to-young-dissidents-in-turkiye-echoes-everywhere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">stand in solidarity<\/a> with those risking everything to peacefully uphold fundamental freedoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-small preFade fadeIn\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-highlight\" data-text-attribute-id=\"2b63172c-ea50-4458-802b-e79e05ad9f0f\"><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">Furkan Karabay, born 15 May 1996, has worked with several media outlets in T\u00fcrkiye, including <em>Cumhuriyet<\/em>, <em>10Haber<\/em>, <em>Oda TV<\/em>, and <em>Ger\u00e7ek G\u00fcndem<\/em>. He notably specialises in judicial developments. In 2024, Karabay published <em>Gurban<\/em>, a book detailing his investigation into businessman Mubariz Mansimov\u2019s activities with the government in T\u00fcrkiye as well as his rise and fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">On 20 May, Karabay sent the following message to PEN members from Marmara prison:<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Even if they shut down our accounts, silence our voices, or cut out our tongues, we are journalists and we will continue to write the truth and practice journalism. We have been in prison before; we will get out again. We will not give up living with honour and dignity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The only thing that those who scan our news stories and try to produce offences will see in our past reporting will be the truth and nothing but the truth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Those who do not want reports to be made, voices to be raised or protests to be organised about the unlawfulness of operations against the Istanbul Mayor&#8217;s Office are trying to prevent the real issues and problems from being discussed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>For the sake of your honour and dignity, never give up the struggle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>We will continue our journalism, research and investigations together with our colleagues all over the world without giving up. We journalists are fighters for the truth. Imprisonment will not deter us from this path.
