The answers to this questionnaire are not only mini-portraits of remarkable creators but also a kind of mirror reflecting the spirit of our organization.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"371\" data-end=\"374\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"376\" data-end=\"393\">1. Creation<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"526\"><strong data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"524\">What devil drives you to sit down at your writing desk? Do you keep any amulet or totem on it? Do you have a starting ritual?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"627\">If it\u2019s a devil, then it\u2019s a bald one. And a bald one has no itch in his head and no comb either.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"632\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"634\" data-end=\"762\"><strong data-start=\"634\" data-end=\"760\">What is the nature of your creative impulse, your illumination? Do you rely more on notebooks\u2014or memory, life\u2019s conflicts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"764\" data-end=\"968\">Nonfiction is a reflection of reflections, so the most important is their primary source\u2014a document, a newspaper publication, a note, a recollection. Through these mirrors, one moves into unending time.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"970\" data-end=\"973\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1076\"><strong data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1074\">If your dreams had a textual version, what would this work be about, and what would it be like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1375\">It\u2019s already written and published, called <em data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1164\">In the Violet Night, the Corner of a Wing<\/em>. In my dreams I can fly, though not very high, like a soul making its way through thick fog. Sometimes I frighten whoever is sleeping nearby\u2014I shout and threaten the creatures of darkness I meet in my dreams.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1380\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1496\"><strong data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1494\">Which book from world (or Belarusian) literature would you close forever so no one could ever read it again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1547\">The one that teaches you to ask such questions.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1549\" data-end=\"1552\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1653\"><strong data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1651\">What is your greatest writer\u2019s sin? What literary taboo have you broken or dream of breaking?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1782\">The greatest writer\u2019s sin is to judge what cannot be judged and must be shown\u2014and to justify that which has no justification.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1787\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1806\">2. Creators<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1950\"><strong data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1948\">Who has influenced your literary style the most? Whose example do you measure yourself against? Whose impulses do you hear most clearly?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"2090\">Ernest Hemingway, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov, Vasil Bykau, Janka Bryl, Venedikt Yerofeyev, Uladzimir Arlou.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2092\" data-end=\"2095\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"2097\" data-end=\"2178\"><strong data-start=\"2097\" data-end=\"2176\">Do you ever ask anyone to read your text before you hand in the manuscript?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2180\" data-end=\"2440\">Documentary prose deals with emptiness as its material and the horizon as its goal, and any outside impulse helps in the struggle with the first but distracts from the movement toward the second. This does not apply to N-dimensional creatures called editors.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2442\" data-end=\"2445\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2580\"><strong data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2578\">If you were offered a spiritual s\u00e9ance with the ghost of a writer, who would it be, and what would you like to learn from them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2582\" data-end=\"2754\">Vasil Bykau. Among others, I am rereading Anatoly Rybakov, the first president of Soviet PEN\u2014his trilogy about the 1930s and the war, which so clearly foresaw the inevitability of the bastard Stalinism of today\u2019s Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3357\" data-end=\"3360\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3362\" data-end=\"3381\">3. Creativity<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3383\" data-end=\"3456\"><strong data-start=\"3383\" data-end=\"3454\">What is the strangest place where inspiration has ever come to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3458\" data-end=\"3482\">At the writing desk \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3484\" data-end=\"3487\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"3489\" data-end=\"3543\"><strong data-start=\"3489\" data-end=\"3541\">What do you consider the greatest literary myth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3545\" data-end=\"3616\">That literature changes the future.
