The answers to this questionnaire are not only mini-portraits of remarkable creators but also a kind of mirror reflecting the spirit of our organization.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"371\" data-end=\"374\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"376\" data-end=\"393\">1. Creation<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"526\"><strong data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"524\">What devil drives you to sit down at your writing desk? Do you keep any amulet or totem on it? Do you have a starting ritual?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"588\">Creativity is a way to resist the absurdity of this world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"751\">As for a protective charm, on my desk sits a little stone from the Dvina River, recently given to me by fellow Polatsk natives during a meeting in Scandinavia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"1205\">Nearby, there is also a gift very important to me\u2014a reproduction sent for New Year by a friend in Germany. It is a drawing of the scholar-encyclopedist, mechanic, and inventor Gabriel Gruber, a Slovene by birth, who in the late 18th century was a professor at the Polatsk Jesuit College and the originator of the idea to transform it into an academy with the status of a university\u2014which later came to pass. The drawing depicts the college\u2019s gallery.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1284\">As for the starting ritual, it does exist, but it is too intimate to share.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1289\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1419\"><strong data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1417\">What is the nature of your creative impulse, your illumination? Do you rely more on notebooks\u2014or memory, life\u2019s conflicts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1442\">And dreams as well.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"22\"><strong data-start=\"5\" data-end=\"20\">2. Creators<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"24\" data-end=\"166\"><strong data-start=\"24\" data-end=\"164\">Who has influenced your literary style the most? Whose example do you measure yourself against? Whose impulses do you hear most clearly?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"406\">A long time ago, critics used to write that Uladzimir Karatkievich influenced me the most. But later, one literary scholar refuted this, saying: in Karatkievich there is painting, while in Arlou there is graphics. It seems he was right.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"408\" data-end=\"411\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"413\" data-end=\"494\"><strong data-start=\"413\" data-end=\"492\">Do you ever ask anyone to read your text before you hand in the manuscript?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"620\">Most often, I ask myself, but a slightly different version of me. For example, a month later. Sometimes even a year later.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"622\" data-end=\"625\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"760\"><strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"758\">If you were offered a spiritual s\u00e9ance with the ghost of a writer, who would it be, and what would you like to learn from them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"855\">I can never choose just one person in any field: an artist, a composer, let alone a writer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"857\" data-end=\"1132\">What I would like to know is something these \u201cghosts,\u201d as you call them, would never be able to answer anyway: which of my books are read fifty years from now\u2014and whether they are read at all? But if the \u201cghosts\u201d had the ability to see the future, then I would have it too.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1137\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1196\"><strong data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1194\">Your top list of writers\u2014members of Belarusian PEN?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1259\">In this list there would certainly be not only PEN members.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1264\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1307\"><strong data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1305\">Whom and what have you read lately?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1496\">Recently, I\u2019ve been working on the second part of one of my historical books, so I have to read a lot of reference and popular science texts and books\u2014in both print and electronic form.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1833\">As for other literature, in its various incarnations, I haven\u2019t read much: <em data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1606\">One Must Imagine Sisyphus Happy<\/em> by Valyantsin Akudovich, last year\u2019s Giedroyc Prize laureate; <em data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1688\">Tears to the Wind<\/em> by Darya Byalkevich; the long-awaited poetry collection <em data-start=\"1745\" data-end=\"1769\">There, Beyond the Wall<\/em> by Taciana Niadbaj, who, like me, dreams of our native Dvina.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1985\">As for translations: collections of poetry by Wis\u0142awa Szymborska and Czes\u0142aw Mi\u0142osz, and now I am making my way through <em data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"1965\">The Doll<\/em> by Boles\u0142aw Prus.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1987\" data-end=\"2157\">A special reading experience was <em data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2031\">The Iliad<\/em>, <em data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2056\">The Epic of Gilgamesh<\/em>, and the yet unpublished <em data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2090\">Aeneid<\/em>, which came to life in Belarusian thanks to Lyavon Barshcheuski.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2162\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2183\"><strong data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2181\">3. Creativity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2258\"><strong data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2256\">What is the strangest place where inspiration has ever come to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2614\">First, I\u2019d like to say that I do believe in this unusual state we conventionally call inspiration\u2014although, for example, Jan Parandowski, the author of the famous <em data-start=\"2423\" data-end=\"2448\">The Alchemy of the Word<\/em>, wrote that it has gone out of fashion. I prefer Friedrich Schiller\u2019s definition, who called it a surprise of the soul. I would add\u2014a surprise of the mind as well.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2616\" data-end=\"2984\">Once I encountered such a surprise in the middle of my beloved Lake Lyukhava near Polatsk. I was swimming, and a grass snake approached me. It froze like a sphinx, as if to say that it was only pretending to be a snake. I replied: perhaps I, too, am only pretending to be a human. We swam away into our separate illusions, but that strange state would not let me go.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3041\">There could be a whole anthology of similar episodes.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3043\" data-end=\"3046\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"3048\" data-end=\"3102\"><strong data-start=\"3048\" data-end=\"3100\">What do you consider the greatest literary myth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3104\" data-end=\"3174\">Perhaps I don\u2019t know world literature well enough to speak about it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3176\" data-end=\"3357\">As for our national literature, there is a myth that is cultivated: that foreign readers are interested in us, Belarusian writers (and our works), only as witnesses or as victims.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3359\" data-end=\"3362\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"3364\" data-end=\"3454\"><strong data-start=\"3364\" data-end=\"3452\">Which sacred book of Belarusian literature are you tempted to rewrite the ending of?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3456\" data-end=\"3646\">Unlike some of my colleagues, I have never rewritten my endings. When republishing, I simply put the date: that\u2019s who I was then. And I don\u2019t even think of rewriting anyone else\u2019s endings.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3648\" data-end=\"3651\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"3653\" data-end=\"3725\"><strong data-start=\"3653\" data-end=\"3723\">What question would you like to hear from readers but haven\u2019t yet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3727\" data-end=\"3784\">Since school, I have believed it\u2019s wrong to give hints.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3786\" data-end=\"3789\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"3791\" data-end=\"3855\"><strong data-start=\"3791\" data-end=\"3853\">Do you believe that words can change the Belarusian world?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3857\" data-end=\"4071\">As we know, in 1918, Belarusians regained the status of a nation-state\u2014under their modern name\u2014mainly thanks to people of the word. Our politicians were also writers, publicists, publishers, historians, and more.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4073\" data-end=\"4369\">Today, in this time, people of the word are preserving the Belarusian language\u2014and more broadly, the culture\u2014as a guarantee of preserving the state. And that leaves the possibility of changing the Belarusian world itself.
