They were livestreaming a peaceful protest honouring the memory of artist Raman Bandarenka, who was reportedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/belarus-statement-spokesperson-death-raman-bandarenka_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Belarusian security officers following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2021\/08\/08\/belarus-declaration-by-the-high-representative-on-behalf-of-the-eu-on-the-first-anniversary-of-the-9-august-2020-fraudulent-presidential-elections-in-belarus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraudulent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presidential elections of August 2020. Andrejeva and \u010culcova were sentenced to seven days of administrative detention on 17 November 2020, before being charged with \u2018organising and preparing of actions that grossly violate public order\u2019 under Article 342, Part 1, of the\u00a0Belarusian Criminal Code, and placed in pre-trial detention. On 18 February 2021, a court in Minsk found Andrejeva and \u010culcova guilty and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spring96.org\/en\/news\/102006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentenced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them to two years in prison. Their sentence was upheld on appeal on 23 April 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrejeva was scheduled to be released on 5 September 2022, yet on 13 July 2022, a court in Homel, southeastern Belarus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spring96.org\/en\/news\/108348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentenced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> her to an additional eight years in prison on bogus charges of \u2018state treason\u2019, under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zakony-by.com\/ugolovnyj_kodeks_rb\/356.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 356, Part 1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of the Belarusian Criminal Code. The trial was held behind closed doors. The verdict was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/data\/people\/katsiaryna-andreyeva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upheld<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on appeal on 20 September 2022. Andrejeva still has to serve the remaining three months in prison left in her first sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born on 2 November 1993, Andrejeva\u2019s is an award-winning Belarusian journalist and writer. She was working for the leading independent broadcaster Belsat TV at the time of her arrest. Her documentary book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belarusian Donbas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-authored with her husband, journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161, and published in 2020, details their investigation into the role of Belarusian citizens and organisations in the war in Donbas, Eastern Ukraine. The book was deemed \u2018extremist\u2019 by the Belarusian authorities and subsequently banned in 2021. Andrejeva started composing poetry while in prison. Her poems, published and translated by the #FreeAllWords initiative, are available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freeallwords.org\/andrejeva-kaciaryna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation in Belarus remains of grave concern. As documented in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2024\/07\/11\/4-years-of-repression-in-belarus-in-general-and-in-the-cultural-sector-in-particular-2020-june-2024.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by PEN Belarus published in July 2024, the past four years have been marked by repression on a global scale, with 1289 people being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prisoners.spring96.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on politically motivated grounds at the time of writing. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements-and-speeches\/2023\/03\/belarus-report-finds-systematic-widespread-and-gross-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concluded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that some of the violations it documented may amount to crimes against humanity.
