{"id":16456,"date":"2024-07-31T13:09:18","date_gmt":"2024-07-31T13:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=16456"},"modified":"2024-08-01T08:26:40","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T08:26:40","slug":"zayava-ab-pryznanni-shasczi-chalavek-palitychnymi-znyavolenymi-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2024\/07\/31\/zayava-ab-pryznanni-shasczi-chalavek-palitychnymi-znyavolenymi-7.html","title":{"rendered":"The statement on the recognition of six people as political prisoners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Joint statement by the Belarusian human rights community<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>July 31, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Belarusian human rights community notes an increase in the number of convictions and imprisonments under several defamation and desecration of state symbols articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, and for other actions aimed at the lawful exercise of the freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>We demand to put an end to the persecution of legitimate expression of views and, reaffirming our repeated calls to decriminalize defamation and to refrain from imposing custodial sentences for insulting officials, the state, government agencies, and symbols (as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spring96.org\/en\/news\/101054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\">mentioned<\/a>\u00a0in the Joint statement of December 22, 2020),\u00a0<strong>note the following<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>We have received information about the following persons imprisoned for insulting A. \u0141uka\u0161enka, government officials (police officers), judges and insulting the state and state symbols, other forms of freedom of expression:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Siarhiej Charytanovi\u010d<\/strong>, convicted of insulting A. \u0141uka\u0161enka and a representative of the authorities under Articles 368, 369 of the Criminal Code; he was sentenced to imprisonment in a penal colony;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Neli Alfiorava<\/strong>, under Article 369 of the Criminal Code; she was sent to compulsory treatment in a psychiatric hospital for insulting a representative of the authorities;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Siarhiej \u0141a\u0161\u010danka<\/strong>, convicted of insulting A. \u0141uka\u0161enka under Article 368 of the Criminal Code; he was sentenced to imprisonment in a penal colony;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ihar Miezin<\/strong>, convicted of insulting A. \u0141uka\u0161enka and a representative of the authorities under Articles 368, 369 of the Criminal Code; he was sentenced to imprisonment in a penal colony;<\/li>\n<li><strong>U\u0142adzimir Nikicin<\/strong>, convicted of calling for sanctions under Article 361 of the Criminal Code; he was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a penal colony;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stanis\u0142a\u016d \u0160vajko\u016dski<\/strong>, convicted of insulting A. \u0141uka\u0161enka under Article 368 of the Criminal Code; he was sentenced to imprisonment in a penal colony;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We consider the persecution and imprisonment of the named individuals to be politically motivated, related to the peaceful exercise of expressing thoughts, and consider them\u00a0<strong>political prisoners<\/strong>\u00a0in accordance with paragraph 3.1(a) of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spring96.org\/files\/misc\/politprisoner-guidelines-final_en.pdf\" class=\"count\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\">Guidelines on the Definition of Political Prisoners<\/a>.
