We call on the Nicaraguan authorities to put an immediate end to the persecution; attempting to silence the words will not silence the truth,\u2019<\/em> said Burhan Sonmez, President of PEN International.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\"><strong>26 July 2024: The Nicaraguan authorities must end its persecution of journalists, cultural workers, writers and media outlets in its\u2019 efforts to silence them. PEN International has received reports that at least the homes of fifteen independent journalists were <\/strong><a href=\"\/cafeconvoz.com\/2024\/07\/22\/dictadura-ortega-murillo-intensifica-caceria-contra-periodistas-en-nicaragua\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><strong>raided<\/strong><\/a><strong> by police over the month of July. The whereabouts of at least three journalists remains unknown at the time of writing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">Since the beginning of 2024, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has\u00a0<a href=\"\/www.oas.org\/es\/CIDH\/jsForm\/%3fFile=\/es\/cidh\/expresion\/prensa\/comunicados\/2024\/168.asp%E2%80%99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\">observed<\/a>\u00a0an exponential increase in the use of various forms of harassment to intimidate independent journalists into silence, including arbitrary arrests, house visits commonly followed by daily summons to police stations, forced exile (frequently coupled with attempts to impede their return to the country), as well as the cancellation of the legal status of various independent media outlets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">Since the onset of 2024, at least 26 journalists have been forced to flee Nicaragua for their safety, increasing the number of journalists living in exile from XX to XX. The state authorities targeting of critical and independent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2018\/04\/in-nicaragua-tv-channels-blocked-journalists-injur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\">journalists<\/a>, activists, artists, media, students, clergy, political opponents \u2013 over this duration &#8212; has reached egregious levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">Reports from sister organisations \u2014 such as IACHR and the\u00a0<a href=\"\/x.com\/PeriodistasNica\/status\/1814796326330138687%E2%80%99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\">association Periodistas y Comunicadores Independientes de Nicaragua (<\/a>PCIN) \u2013 echo concerns shared by PEN International, in its monitoring of mounting restrictions on freedom of expression. And also extend to the safety of disappeared journalist and cultural communicator, Fabiola Tercero, whose whereabouts remain unknown since 12 July 2024, following a police raid on her home. \u00a0Fabiola Tercero also runs \u2018El Rinc\u00f3n de Fabi\u2019, a cultural space for the free exchange of books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">PEN International would like to remind the Nicaraguan authorities of its obligations under International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance in which individuals deprived of their personal integrity must have their rights respected, this includes timely access to counsel and to be held in an official place of detention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\">PEN International, reiterates its call to the Nicaraguan authorities to stop its relentless repression against journalists, media, cultural actors, writers and those who for using their words and critical ideas are victims of attacks and persecution. It demands the release of others who remain unjustly imprisoned, for their exercise of the right to peaceful expression, including the renowned academic and writer Freddy Antonio Quezada, and journalist V\u00edctor Ticay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"preFade fadeIn\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/628f9ae10b12c8255bd8814d\/t\/65fb13d5e1a33259fe869077\/1710953478502\/PEN+International+Case+List+2023-2024+Final.pdf\" class=\"count\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\">War, Censorship and Persecution:\u00a0PEN International Case List\u00a02023\/2024<\/a>\u00a0documents censorship and history against several journalists, writers and PEN members.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PEN Belarus joins the\u00a0statement of PEN International and condemns growing wave of repression against journalists in Nicaragua. \u2018Our global community will continue to highlight and denounce repressive actions against critical journalists, authors, and media outlets who are threatened and harassed for their work and critical thoughts.
