May 21 \u2013 Day of Political Prisoners in Belarus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On this day three years ago, political prisoner and activist Vitold A\u0161urak was tortured to death in a colony. The Belarusian PEN joins in commemorating this date and urges support for Belarusian political prisoners, expressing solidarity with them, and demanding their release from the authorities.<\/p>\n

According to our monitoring<\/a>, as of May 15, there are at least 37 People of Word and at least 156 cultural figures in detention. Detailed analytics on the state of cultural rights in Belarus can be found in our monitoring report<\/a> for the first quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n
