{"id":11487,"date":"2025-08-05T14:12:41","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T14:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=11487"},"modified":"2026-03-07T07:49:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T07:49:22","slug":"alyaksandr-franczkevich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2025\/08\/05\/alyaksandr-franczkevich.html","title":{"rendered":"Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Political persecution:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>He was repeatedly subjected to administrative and criminal prosecution for his civil position and participation in protests and has been recognized as a political prisoner twice.<\/p>\n<p>Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d was a political prisoner from September 2010 to September 2013.<\/p>\n<p>On May 27, 2011, Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d, was convicted in the Zavodski District Court in Minsk under part 6 of article 16 (participation in a crime in the form of aiding and abetting), part 2 of article 339, part 2 of article 351, part 1 of article 354 Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus up to three years of imprisonment in a medium-security colony.<\/p>\n<p>Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d was arrested on August 13, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>On August 28, 2020, he was recognized as a political prisoner.<\/p>\n<p>Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d was indicted by the following articles of the Criminal Code: part 1 of Art. 293 \u2014 Organization of mass riots; part 3 of Art. 293 \u2014 Training of persons to participate in mass riots, or financing such an activity; part 1, Art. 342 \u2014 Organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order or active participation in them; part 3 of Art. 361 \u2014 Calls for actions aimed at harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus; part 3 of Art. 218 \u2014 Intentional destruction or property damage, committed in a way that is dangerous to the general public, or which entailed causing damage on a large scale; part 2 of Art. 339 &#8211; Hooliganism committed by a group of persons; art. 341 \u2014 Desecration of buildings and property damage; part 1, Art. 361-1 \u2014 Creation of an extremist formation or participation in it; part 3 of Art. 130 &#8211; Inciting enmity or enmity; part 2 of Art. 339 \u2013 Malicious hooliganism; Art. 295-3 \u2014 Illegal actions in relation to objects with the use of combustible substances; part 1, Art. 285 \u2014 Creating or managing a criminal organization; part 1, Art. 13 and part 2 of Art. 293 \u2014 Preparation for mass riots.<\/p>\n<p>On September 6, 2022, the Minsk City Court sentenced Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d to 17 years in a medium-security penal colony and fined him 22 400 rubles (over $8,800).<\/p>\n<p>On February 28, 2023, the Supreme Court reviewed Franckievi\u010d\u2019s appeal in a closed session. The judicial panel decided to shorten Franckievi\u010d\u2019s sentence by 3 months. As a result, he is to spend 16 years and 9 months in a medium-security penal colony.<\/p>\n<p>On March 16, 2023, the KGB added Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d to the &#8220;terrorist&#8221; list.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2023, he was transferred to Penal Colony No. 5 in Ivacevi\u010dy.<\/p>\n<p>He served his sentence in Colony No. 5 in Ivacevi\u010dy before being transferred to Colony No. 11 in Va\u016dkavysk. In 2024, the colony administration initiated another criminal case against him under Article 411, leading to an additional one-year sentence. He was then transferred to Colony No. 8 in Or\u0161a, where the administration launched another criminal case.<\/p>\n<p>On 10 February 2025, the Viciebsk Regional Court began the criminal trial of his mother,\u00a0Tacciana Franckievi\u010d, and his aunt,\u00a0Natalla \u0141abacevi\u010d, under charges of facilitating extremist activities (Article 361-4). They were detained on 19 July 2024 in Navapo\u0142ack when they brought a care package for Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d to the penal colony.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"39\" data-end=\"440\">On 18 February 2025, Tacciana Franckievi\u010d, the mother of Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d, was sentenced to 3 years and 3 months of imprisonment in a low-security penal colony under Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code (facilitating extremist activity);<br data-start=\"300\" data-end=\"303\" \/>his aunt, Natalla Labacevi\u010d, was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment in a low-security penal colony under the same article.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"442\" data-end=\"651\">On 27 February 2025, Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d faced a second consecutive trial under Part 2 of Article 411 of the Criminal Code (malicious disobedience to the administration of the penal colony).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"699\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">He was transferred to Penal Colony No. 20.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"699\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">On 5 August 2025, the court issued a ruling to change the regime to imprisonment, imposing a sentence of 3 years\u2019 imprisonment.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Creative activity:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Behind bars, he wrote two short stories <em>The Diary of a Lost Girl and Hug Me Tighter<\/em>. The stories were included in the book <em>Voice of Freedom from behind Bars<\/em>. <em>Anthology of works of Belarusian political prisoners<\/em> (Vilnius, 2013).<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, for the short story <em>Hug me tighter<\/em>, Alaksandr Franckievi\u010d became the laureate of the Franci\u0161ak Alachnovi\u010d Award, founded jointly by PEN Belarus and Radio Svaboda, given for the best work written in prison.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Publications:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kamunikat.org\/golas-voli-z-za-krataw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Voice of Freedom from Behind Bars: An Anthology of Works by Belarusian Political Prisoners<\/a>.
