His plight is a stark reminder of the relentless repression faced by dissenting voices in Belarus, where the Lukashenko regime will seemingly stop at nothing to crush any forms of criticism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>PEN International strongly condemns the conviction of Uladzimir Mackievi\u010d. We call for his immediate and unconditional release, and for his sentencing and conviction to be overturned on appeal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Belarusian authorities must urgently end their crackdown on independent voices. All others already behind bars simply for exercising their right to freedom of expression \u2013 including writer and human rights defender Ales Bialiatski \u2013 must also be released.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 23 June 2022, Prominent Belarusian philosopher Uladzimir Mackievi\u010d was <a href=\"https:\/\/spring96.org\/en\/news\/108151\">sentenced<\/a> to five years in prison.
