{"id":10443,"date":"2022-04-14T11:16:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T11:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=10443"},"modified":"2022-04-14T11:20:14","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T11:20:14","slug":"naviny-ukrainskaga-pena-12-krasavika","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2022\/04\/14\/naviny-ukrainskaga-pena-12-krasavika.html","title":{"rendered":"Newsletter of PEN Ukraine (April 12)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What\u2019s going on?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia continues to commit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/war.ukraine.ua\/russia-war-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">war crimes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and kill Ukrainian civilians. In the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine, Russia is launching missile, air and artillery strikes on cities and villages. On April 8, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61036740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">striking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Kramatorsk railway station \u2014 the central hub for migrants from Donetsk and Luhansk regions \u2014 Russia killed at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/death-toll-kramatorsk-missile-strike-rises-57-ukraine-official-says-2022-04-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">57 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and 109 were wounded.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence of war crimes by the Russian occupiers continues to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61036880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recorded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the newly liberated Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions. Horrifying photos of dead residents of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/eng\/news\/2022\/04\/10\/7338605\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyiv region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose bodies were left on the streets, or hastily buried, continue to shock Ukrainians and the rest of the world. The &#8220;special operation&#8221; of the Russian troops is quite literally a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61017352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genocide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Ukrainian people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In liberated Irpin, evidence emerged that Russians had destroyed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/penclubua\/posts\/1870928699772241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writers\u2019 Creativity House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where famous Ukrainian writers used to work and live. In Borodianka, Russian soldiers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chytomo.com\/en\/russians-damage-shevchenko-monument-in-borodianka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">damaged a monument<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. In the ancient city of Chernihiv, the Russian occupiers committed more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chytomo.com\/en\/russians-damage-ancient-cathedrals-ramparts-and-citadel-in-chernihiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 crimes against cultural heritage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including ancient cathedrals, ramparts and a citadel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Mariupol, the Russian invaders organised a collection point for the bodies of their victims, and are using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/khpg.org\/en\/1608810391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobile crematoria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hide their war crimes. Russia has left overwhelming\u00a0 evidence of torture, indiscriminate murder, rape and plunder in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/04\/11\/world\/europe\/bucha-terror.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bucha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other Kyiv region cities. The Kremlin is now hiding evidence of its war crimes in Mariupol, where, according to authorities, Russians killed over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20220411-live-zelensky-says-russian-forces-are-moving-to-larger-operations-in-ukraine-s-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10000 civilians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Ukraine\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/army-experience-drives-ukraines-vereshchuk-secure-prisoner-release-2022-04-11\/?fbclid=IwAR2jFM3nWnjhKBc2lfwcxJKWeTt_LhNVyp_2YqPPnKLA7L16WKl8Kf7ItmI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,700 Ukrainians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are currently being held by Russia and pro-Russian separatists. President Zelensky said hundreds of thousands of citizens in occupied regions had been deported to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/1594849\/Ukraine-news-Russia-concentration-camps-Zelensky-war-update-Vladimir-Putin-latest?fbclid=IwAR2wD1dcoiCPtziMukD8UpoLo4-04rgiE2ZQFuwlJ5oC0v5qvnXSpdILjyI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russian concentration camps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Russian crimes against media<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 2, journalist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tsn.ua\/en\/ato\/died-six-days-before-his-79th-birthday-invaders-brutally-tortured-and-murders-retired-1st-rank-captain-in-mariupol-suburbs-photos-2032963.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yevhen Bal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> died in Melekine near Mariupol. On March 18, he had been arbitrarily detained by Russian soldiers. Yevhen\u2019s house was raided and he was tortured. Severely beaten, he was released three days later. The death of Yevhen Bal is a direct consequence of the injuries inflicted by his captors. Yevhen died six days short of his 79th birthday. Bal was the author of numerous reports about the war in Ukraine, a writer, and a volunteer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 3, in Nova Kakhovka, the Russian occupiers abducted a local journalist and writer, the editor of the online publication <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nova Kakhovka City<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/khpg.org\/en\/1608810349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oleksandr Hunko<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Prior to that, his apartment was searched.
