We wrote a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org.ua\/en\/claims\/lyst-ukrayinskogo-pen-do-mizhnarodnoyi-pen-spilnoty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the international PEN community describing our gratitude for your solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What&#8217;s going on?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Russian army continues to fire on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/06\/world\/europe\/ukraine-irpin-civilian-death.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">civilian population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Ukrainian cities such as Kharkiv, Kyiv, Irpin, Mariupol, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and others. Russia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/08\/ukraine-war-civilians-sumy-irpin-refugees-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not allow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the evacuation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/evacuation-route-offered-fleeing-ukrainians-mined-1685418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">civilians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The occupants continue to bomb <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0a9MC20dUDQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">residential areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyivIndependent\/status\/1501218105342763020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hospitals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thus organizing an artificial humanitarian catastrophe in many cities. People have been living without food, water, light, and heat for several days now, while Russia violates all kinds of world conventions and drops bombs and missiles on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HopkoHanna\/status\/1501111508520083458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people&#8217;s heads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chytomo.com\/en\/cultural-disaster-what-ukrainian-sites-were-destroyed-by-russian-occupants\/?fbclid=IwAR0kYMwY9Ar-7xdNkNNziUFiukby06r1GkvkcP7nju-0K8gNm4i1e_yvpUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dozens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cultural sites have been destroyed in the 13 days of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. Among them is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/style\/article\/maria-prymachenko-paintings-ukraine-peace-symbol\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">museum of a Ukrainian naive artist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/antonov-an-225-largest-plane-destroyed-ukraine-scli-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plane listed in the Guinness Book of World Records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cathedrals, theaters, schools, and many other architectural monuments. UNESCO calls Russia to immediately end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-unesco-statement-following-adoption-un-general-assembly-resolution?hub=701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aggression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against Ukraine. As of 7 March Russia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Podolyak_M\/status\/1500815176773341188?fbclid=IwAR1HY-n_OzjvNecRoY-m4pTEzK-EWDnXZS6kqkpis_dDzwYS9fegNVd9dUM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">damaged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 202 schools, 34 hospitals, and more than 1500 residential buildings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Losses\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-ato\/3424272-zelensky-russian-invaders-killed-52-children-over-13-days-of-war-in-ukraine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52 children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been killed, 76 children have been injured. In total, at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/03\/1113512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">474 civilians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were killed and 861 more were injured. The real numbers could be higher. Only in Mariupol city, which is surrounded by Russians, officials say about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/eng\/news\/2022\/03\/9\/7329819\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,300 civilians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> killed. The war has produced more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data2.unhcr.org\/en\/situations\/ukraine\/location?secret=unhcrrestricted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 million refugees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 13 days of the Russian war against Ukraine 2 journalists have been killed, 10 were injured.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 1 March Ukrainian camera operator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2022\/03\/ukrainian-camera-operator-yevhenii-sakun-killed-in-russian-shelling-of-kyiv-tv-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yevhenii Sakun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was killed in the Russian shelling of the Kyiv TV tower. On 6 March investigative journalist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2022\/03\/ukrainian-camera-operator-yevhenii-sakun-killed-in-russian-shelling-of-kyiv-tv-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viktor Dudar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was killed on the front line during a battle with Russian troops near the southern city of Mykolaiv. On 6 March famous Ukrainian actor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60659363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasha Lee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was killed in the Russian bombardment of Irpin. On 8 March in Sumy, a Russian bomb killed 16-year-old Ukrainian sambo champion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/denisovaombudsman\/posts\/498973638250580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artem Pryimenko<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>PEN Ukraine webpage on war<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEN Ukraine launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org.ua\/en\/pen-zapustyv-storinku-z-aktualnoyu-informatsiyeyu-ta-materialamy-pro-vijnu-rosiyi-proty-ukrayiny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the latest news and materials on Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine with information on the situation in Ukraine, links on important materials and information resources, petitions, addresses, the list of editions about Ukraine to read in English, and books by Ukrainian authors recommended for translation.
