{"id":10202,"date":"2022-02-28T14:39:58","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T14:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/?p=10202"},"modified":"2024-06-12T13:40:28","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T13:40:28","slug":"karagodnaya-sprava-horovodnoe-delo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2022\/02\/28\/karagodnaya-sprava-horovodnoe-delo.html","title":{"rendered":"\u201cROUND DANCE CASE\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The statistics of the <a href=\"https:\/\/penbelarus.org\/en\/2022\/02\/16\/prava-na-kulturu-belarus-2021-bel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">monitoring<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of cultural\u00a0and human rights violations in relation to cultural workers, implemented by PEN Belarus, did not include the persecution of Belarusians convicted under the so-called &#8220;Round dance case.&#8221;\u00a0Because the numerous protest actions of summer-autumn 2020 were so rich in creative manifestations and non-standard artistic participation by the public,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>we<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>perceive the history of round dance primarily as a peaceful assembly, rather than a separate cultural act.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, we cannot altogether ignore it. Firstly, it is one of the largest &#8220;cases of political prosecution&#8221; in the history of Belarus. Secondly, the theme of the round dance \u2014 a classical ritual and\u00a0folklore tradition of Belarus \u2014 was equated with extremism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, on September 13, 2020, at the March of Heroes in Brest, at the intersection of Boulevard Cosmonauts and Ma\u0161era\u016d Avenue, protesters danced, clapped their hands, danced and sang &#8220;Mury&#8221; (Walls) and &#8221; Try \u010darapachi&#8221; (Three turtles). As a result, about a thousand participants of the peaceful assembly were dispersed by a water cannon and a criminal case was opened &#8220;on the fact of organization and active participation in group actions, grossly violating public order. The &#8220;damage&#8221; from the round dance was about 215 euros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first trial in the &#8220;round dance case&#8221; took place in Brest in January 2021, and since then 11 groups of defendants have been sentenced. As of the end of 2021, a total of 114 people had been convicted.
