More Solidarity than Arrests: What Belarusian Culture Experienced Over the Week (newsletter 8)

"You know, I come out of Akrestsina, and a lot of people are there to greet us: musicians, friends, acquaintances and strangers, they all came to support us, we take pictures, we drink wine… And where do they [those responsible for the violence and injustice] go? They are always in prison. They are prisoners. I feel sorry for them. Nobody greets them," Andruś Takindanh said after having spent 15 days in jail, and his mood coincides with the mood of this issue of our weekly digest.

The flywheel of repression in Belarus is unfolding, and the pressure that cultural sphere has been dealing with can’t be compared to other, even the most difficult times that it has seen in the independent Belarus. However, Belarusian Arts and Culture community respond with solidarity and new creative works. Quoting actor Ilya Yasinski, who was severely beaten during his detention and is now in hospital with broken vertebrae, "You can break our spine, but you will not break our spirit."

The “people's ultimatum” expired on October 25, and many cultural figures, sometimes entire collectives, joined the nationwide strike. There’s been an escalation of pressure, but the regime can’t restrain the freedom of thought and creativity any longer.
